The Mexican border wall--being privately built

Saw this yesterday in the Huff Post US;

Seems some patriotic folks are building the wall on private land. Have apparently raised MILLIONS of dollars with gofundme

In the meantime, it is my understanding that Trump’s wall is slowly creeping ahead. What’s the bet that some extreme left winger or peeved Mexican will blow up the wall, repeatedly?

Of course the Trump administration ignored my far more sensible and far cheaper solution:take say 6 heavily armed helicopter gunships to patrol the US side of the border. They shoot anything which looks as if they shouldn’t be there. They will probably also kill some US vigilantes and drug smugglers by accident as well, so it’s a win-win situation.

Yes, I do have an opinion, but as it’s not in my country, I’ll keep schtum.

Oz? Nah, we don’t have a wall. We DO have a fence 3488 miles long. It was built to keep out the rabbits. (really) Today it also keeps out dingos.

Aussies have a thing about rabbits, which are considered vermin. Hence, Aussies tend to find the .46 second ad below hilarious.

Being an island continent has its advantages regarding immigration. With a foreign species it’s a different story.

Ultimately it would probably be easier for the US to take over Mexico and handle the problem at its root instead of messing around with the wall, which will be a drawn out headache at best.

You bet, if only it wasn’t for all those pesky Mexicans. I mean, they went and got quite uppity about Prez Donnie’s sensible proposed wall. Only fair that they should pay for it… Just who do they think they are, Americans?

If some landowners want to build a wall on their own land, and if they get righties to blow money funding it, more power to them. It won’t help any immigration problem, but it will drain money from righties.

Relevance: Quite a few years ago, my neighbour came to ask me if he could remove our shared fence, and replace it with a higher one, at his expense.Just over 2 metres tall, my permission was needed. So, he ripped down the old iron fence, and build an El Spiffo new one. GREAT! A couple of months later, on his land, he built a wall, of timber sheeting .It was for his pool; he bunged a very nice fountain against it, on his side . All I could see was this black piece of crap. Hate it. Nothing I can do about it short of setting fire to it.

I DO have some bamboo fairly close to his fence. You never know. With any luck it will come up through the bottom of his pool --it’s one of those ghastly above ground jobs, built on a slope, and is surrounded by decking. Looks pretty good actually.

Well actually they do think they're Americans! But no, Mexicans wouldn't pose a problem in that scenario -- they would be wiped off the face of the earth and their government replaced in a few days.

However we are too nice to our fiesta-loving neighbor for that, though it would be a lot more decisive than building a wall legally and tolerating their dysfunction with no end in sight.

“fiesta loving”? How can anyone tolerate such a neighbor who loves fiestas?

Indeed.

South Australia was known as ‘the wowser state’ for decades. Those who ran the place were strict Methodists.

Want to hire their church hall for a wedding reception? No probs. Oh, no alcohol is permitted. Pubs closed at 6pm. Shops closed at 11 am Saturday. One could not buy alcohol, meat, fruit, bread on Sundays. Nothing was open, and no sports on Sunday.

The Methodists were also very much against sex. They were afraid it might lead to dancing.

That brings to mind why Baptists will never have sex standing up. (People might think they are dancing.)

It becomes a problem when it's higher on the list of things to do than taking care of business -- which is the case with Latin America as a whole.

The undocumented (Latin) aliens that I have seen seem to work harder and cheaper than most US citizens. The legal Latins I have known, work successfully, tho some do like to party.

Same things here, especially with the {legal} Italians and refugee Vietnamese. Different emphasises for each group: The Italians infuriated many Aussies because they worked VERY hard, and had a large mutual support network.

Our next door neighbour wanted to do extensive additions to his house. Friends and relatives rallied 'round, different trades and abilities. On weekends. It was up in 3 months. This worked on the basis of reciprocity.

The Vietnamese also had a stunning work ethic.

However their emphasis was education for their children, who studied VERY hard. A common example; my dentist came here as a refugee with his sister and rice farmer parents. He became a dentist, his sister is a lawyer. Parents still do not speak english well.

Australia was once described by one of our lefty politician as having “a culture of envy”. He was right. Here we have the spectacle of welfare for the middle classes: Non means tested ‘family allowance’ with a fortnightly payment for each child. Generous child care subsidies. AND of course things such as negative gearing on investment properties, and franking credits on shares.

Heaven forfend someone get more from the government than oneself, regardless of your need.

PS you have never really been to a party until you have been to an Italian celebration. In Italian, it’s “festa”

PPS don’t drink the home made ‘grappa’.

See, now I want to try some of that “homemade grappa” which I assume is something like white lightning. I never had a problem with white lightning, but then I never took more than one or two shots.

That's why they're a problem.

Not quite, but yes. ,“Grappa” is what Aussies call ‘plonk’; it’s a home made wine of [comparatively] high alcohol content ,but is not fermented. THAT is the grappa I’ve had. However, it can also be a home made brandy, which IS fermented, and can be 70-120% proof. Not noted for its smooth finish

I once took a partial shot of something we call “everclear”. As I recall, it was horrible.

I bought Everclear about 5 years ago, just to see what it was like. The bottle is sitting in our cupboard over the fridge, still almost full.

The alcohol content makes me think it’s more for use in a chemistry laboratory or hard-partying college students, than casual consumption.

jello shots

but don’t use much, it won’t jell
