I think Bernie or Elizabeth could beat T rump, as well as any of the other Dem candidates who are running. But why are the oldies ahead in the polls? Because of name recognition? Because of experience? We haven’t had a particularly experienced President since George W. and he was a disaster.
I suggest looking at the candidates who have not spent most of their adult lives in the 20th Century.
My theory is, the boomers don’t want to let it go and allow GenX to take over. I think Kamala was a GenX’er as well as Castro and a couple of others. I just hope my generation isn’t as stubborn in letting go and allowing the Millenials to take over when they are old enough to be president and VP. I think AOC would be great, but she’s not quite old enough to run until 2023. That said, I truly feel the Boomers don’t want to let go and intend on holding a tight grip. That said, all the boomers dropped out because they didn’t have the funds and weren’t getting the donations to their campaign like Bernie and Warren are. I also don’t think Geo. W. was experienced or it wouldn’t have been a disaster. However, President Obama had experience and he did a fine job, IMO. We’d be looking at those who haven’t spent most of their lives in the 20th century if they were old enough to run. Millennials aren’t old enough, yet. Gen X’ers are and, like the Boomers, they too have spent most of their lives in the 20th Century. Right now, the Boomers (Warren, Bernie, the dotard, Biden, Bloomberg) have a firm grip on things and won’t let go. The Gen X’ers (Obama, Kamala, Castro, and a couple others) tried. However, you’re going to have to wait about 4 more years, if not 6, before the oldest Millennial can run for president.
Anyone under 58 has spent most of their adultlives in the 21st century.
AOC can run in 2024.
George W. had administrative experience as a Governor, before he became President. He also had some half ass military service. But he was still an epic fail as POTUS. Obama only had a bit of experience in Congress (not very much). His experience as a community organizer (tho scoffed at and made fun of, by the Repubs, helped him get elected.)
No Tim, I’ve only spent 20 years of my life in the 21st century and I’m not 58 yet. I’m 53. Born in early '66. Do the math. I’ve spent most of my life in the 20th century. Even as an adult, I’ve spent quite a bit of my life in the 20th Century.
As for Obama, he also had a degree in Constitutional law. That said, I really don’t see how military experience counts unless you are looking for a warmonger.
My contention is NOT that you have spent half of your life in the 21st Century. When I 1st made the relevant statement, I said “adult life”. The 2nd time, I bolded and italicized the word “adult”.
You became an adult at age 18. That was 1984. That means you spent 16 years as an adult in the 20th Century. You have spent 20 years, as an adult, in the 21st Century. If you don’t believe my math, we could try to contact Andrew Yang, I hear he is good at math.
You have spent most of your ADULT life in the 20th Century, so you meet that criteria for me voting for you as POTUS. Would you like me to write you in? I am still considering who to vote for on Super Tuesday.
No TimB, I was saying I have spent most of my adult life, thus far, in the 20th Century, but I guess you are right. Still Kamala, Castro, Yang, and a couple others would qualify too. However, most of them dropped out because the public was not funding their campaigns. The public has been funding Warren and Sanders’ campaigns, because they do mostly grassroots funding.
Yang has done pretty well with funding. He is still in the race, I think. Although he missed the last debate by not qualifying per the minimum polling requirement. He is pretty far out with his $1k a month “freedom dividend” for all. But I could vote for him over T rump.
However, you’re going to have to wait about 4 more years, if not 6, before the oldest Millennial can run for president.
The oldest millennials are pushing 40 right now. Millennials were born roughly between the early 1980s and the late 90s.
Gen-X was born roughly between the mid 60s and early 80s. The start and end dates vary a bit for everyone born after the boomers.
Buttigeig was born in 1982 and is technically considered a millennial, though really, older millennials like him have more in common with GenX. Big cultural difference between him and AOC — who was born in 1989 and truly right in the heart of that generation.
And middle class people are generally too ethical to scam their way to going on Safaris, or to afford such. And most would probably not feel pride at standing by the variously dismembered bodies of animals as somehow representing their personal prowess.
I have nothing against hunting or safaris, but I have known quite a few middle class guys who hunt on their own property and have posed with the animals they killed in photos that they enjoy showing off.
Buttigieg is more conservative than AOC, in various ways. I don’t think AOC is particularly religious. Buttigieg is. Buttigieg is not for Medicare for All (rather he supports Medicare option for all who want it.) AOC will not likely be a fan of Buttigieg if he wins the nomination, but I think it might be easier for her to support him than 20th Century Joe.
Oh no, I can’t see AOC supporting Buttigieg at all. Even she knows we have to have universal health care of some sort and if one isn’t going to work in that direction, she probably won’t support them. As you said, 21st century thinking and that means universal health care.
Gen-X was born roughly between the mid 60s and early 80s. The start and end dates vary a bit for everyone born after the boomers.
How well I know this and being a cusp of a Boomer (depending on which chart one views, I miss Boomer by a year or two), I have some commonalities and values with them. My mother is a boomer and my grandparents were the Greatest (and to me they were, but that’s another story lol). My sons born in 89 and 91 are Millennials. My grandson, who’s almost 3, I’m guessing, is a Gen Z? Still, I think X’ers and Z’s got a bad wrap concerning names. Then again, with climate change going the way it is, Gen Z may end up with “Z Nation” full of a bunch of zombies. lol JK Seriously though, everyone one else got better names and not just a letter and what comes after Z? Double A? Maybe the human race will grow up by then if we don’t exterminate ourselves.
This is one of many things that Bernie has (Climate Change plan) that others don’t have and he won’t sway from it. If we don’t do something, my grandson and the rest of his generation will not have habitable planet to live on and they might not get to grow up for that matter. They could have much shorter lives for it. So yes, we need to turn politics over to the Millenials, but unless we make drastic changes in which to curb climate change, they aren’t going to be doing politics either.
The Dem Party has 2 camps, the so called moderates and the so called liberal progressives. A nominee that is probably in one camp more than another is going to be selected to run against T rump. If the entire support from both camps is not given to the Dem nominee, T rump will be re-elected.
This means that if whoever loses the Dem nomination does not whole heartedly support the selected nominee, then those losers will make us all really really screwed losers.
So if AOC, who I have strong regard for, does not support for a moderate that wins, then she will be a pox on us all.
Similarly, if Sanders wins, and the rest of the Dems (including moderates) do not wholeheartedly support him, then they will be a pox on us all.
The young 'uns, I have noticed, have a real problem with 2 things: 1) buying in to false equivalencies and 2) making the perfect the enemy of the good.
Neither branch of the Party can make that mistake this time, or kiss anything like a decent vision of America - Goodbye.
Bernie Sanders is in more than one camp on the Democratic platform and we already know that AOC has thrown her hat in the ring for Bernie. I also think that the majority of Democratic young people support Bernie Sanders.
How so? She won the primary and he basically was telling them to vote for her in the presidential race. That’s not throwing anyone under the bus. He lost the primary and didn’t want the young people not to vote. If they didn’t vote and suspect many didn’t, we’d end up with the dotard. However, Hillary did win the popular vote, but the electoral college put the dotard in office. So maybe they did vote, but the electoral college was paid off to vote against the populace.
If Bernie wins, we must all be completely in support of him. If someone else wins, we must allbe completely in support of her or him.
Now is the time to support the person you want to be the nominee. But that person may still not win the nomination. Too bad, so sad. But the winner is the ONLY possible replacement of T rump. So if that is 20th Century Joe, or Warren, or Yang, or any of the others, they are our guy or gal. Otherwise, you are supporting the T rump, and the effective end of anything like a democracy in the USA.
@TimB I get that and that is why Bernie had his supporters vote for Hillary. That said, I don’t see Yang winning the primary. I think it will either be Centrist Biden, Billionaire Bloomberg (he maybe buy the election. I hope not though), Corporate Dem Elizabeth Warren, or Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders. Because I loathe the dotard, if Bernie or Warren lose, I will grit my teeth and vote for whichever other Dem wins. Yes, I said Warren. She’s always been my second place person, despite her being a corporate Dem. Since Kamala dropped out, I don’t have a third choice, but even so, in the presidential election this time around now is not the time to vote outside the box for another party because we loathe the dotard but don’t like the Dem choices. We have to go the standard two party system and vote Dem to keep the dotard out and ignore the fact that there are really more parties out there than just two. However, I hope in the near future there is a shake up of our government for the better and not the worse.
Tim: If Bernie wins, we must all be completely in support of him. If someone else wins, we must all be completely in support of her or him.
What if you get your wish and you all threw support behind Bernie or whichever candidate wins the nomination and Trump comes out on top in a landslide? Would you accept Trump's victory or try to take him down again for the next four years? You know the answer, don't you? Do you think the world see the US as a great democracy or a farce? If you guys keep this up, our national fabric will be torn to shreds and every US politician will become the proxy of foreign powers. America will be devoured like a buffalo by a pack of hyenas.
Hell no! He’s a criminal who cheated his way into the White House in the first place and will/is do/doing it again. Russia rigged it for him because he’s Putin’s puppet and he’s VERY corrupt! No, if the dotard, who is a fascist stays in office, that will be what will tear this country to shreds and he’s been trying from day one to destroy this country. If anything, those of us who are fighting against him, we’re the ones who are patriotic. We are a proxy of foreign powers now. We are alone because of the dotard. Even our own allies have abandon us because the dotard pushed them all away in favour of dictators. You have no idea how much of a dictator the dotard is, do you? Oh and one more thing, a buffalo from the American continent cannot be devoured by hyenas, because there are no hyenas on the American continents- not North or South America.
