Russian invasion to open a new chapter' in NATO history

Let’s bring this back around to the title of this thread.

Finland and Sweden have together submitted requests to join Nato, in what is seen as a seismic shift in Europe’s security architecture. Jon Henley, the Guardian’s Europe correspondent, looks at why the Nordic countries forwent years of neutrality, and what the move means for the war in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General to Allied Defence Chiefs: ‘Reset’ our posture to reflect new reality in Europe

He outlined the changed security environment due to Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war in Ukraine, describing it as “crucial and dangerous time for Euro-Atlantic security.”

President Putin is failing in his strategic objectives, the Secretary General said, “Ukraine stands, NATO remains strong, and transatlantic unity is solid”.

Of course, then a fly gotta show up to try and spoil the porridge.

Why Turkey dissents on Finland and Sweden joining NATO and why it matters

By Bryan Pietsch

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/16/turkey-nato-sweden-finland-ukraine/

Finnish and Swedish officials have declared in recent days their intention to join NATO, citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But their acceptance to the alliance requires unanimous consent among members, and the leader of one such state — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey — has voiced hesitation about the two nations. …

WHAT TO KNOW

Erdogan alleged that Sweden and Finland were “home to many terrorist organizations,” referring primarily to the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. …

The United States and Sweden have drawn Erdogan’s ire over their support of a PKK-affiliated militia in Syria, where the group was fighting the Islamic State. Turkey reprimanded the United States in February 2021, and Ankara summoned Sweden’s ambassador to Turkey over the matter two months later. …

Turkey has aired other grievances about Sweden and Finland, including concerns about security guarantees and blocked exports of weapons to Turkey. …

Happy to see that source documents ends the no NATO expansion denial here. Moving on - yes turkey with the second largest army in NATO are very upset that they werent consulted about Finland Sweden. Its seems the Americans have again rushed things without assessing the consequences.

For its support Turkey has now demanded to be re-included in the F-35 advanced aircraft program, which it was barred from after it bought S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, and wants the approval of a deal to purchase dozens of F-16 fighter jets and upgrade kits from the US. You can bet if this is granted other countries will make their demands . Watch greece in thus space. Croatia has also come out and wont support finland sweden passage into NATO. All this with the EU Russian oil embargo in tatters with the likes of italy buying more russian oil than ever.

The gas supplies to Finland will stop next week because Finland refuses to pay in rubles and russia is 90% where Finland gets its gas from.

Meanwhile the food crisis has the West in panic mode. Tens of millions face starvation due to war in Ukraine, UN chief warns https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/w/tens-millions-face-starvation-due-war-ukraine-un-chief-warns Which rather begs the question about what the UN is doing to get a ceasefire, to stop western arms shipments and to progress genuine peace talks.

And who is to blame for this crisis?

Tens of millions face starvation due to war in Ukraine, UN chief warns

Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat and barley supplies, with more than 36 countries relying heavily on their imports.

This picture was taken in the Ukraine, not in Russia.

I don’t see any pictures like that coming out of Russia as a result of ANY bomb from ANYONE!!!

The west banned fertilisers from Russia and belarus which has had a devastating impact global crop production. Russia has redirected its wheat to feed its people after all the EU and US and UK sanctions place on her. She will move to wheat for rubles just like for gas for rubles which the EU has green lighted.

And when did that happen? Before Russia invaded Ukraine or after Russia invaded Ukraine?
I guess you condone holding the world’s food supply hostage to get what you want.?

Turkey is the only country not wanting Finland.

It’s also kind of difficult to grow any crops when Russia is bombing the crap out you. So it’s not the fertilizers or at least not just.

So?

Nobody likes Russia right now because Russia is the aggressor. What is it you don’t understand about that?

It seems you are not that good at reading news, or the posts here. No one here denied NATO expansion. I don’t know how anyone could.

And, not consulted? They get a veto vote like everyone.

And even then it is membership expansion. NATO has no territory to expand or desire.

And, not consulted? They get a veto vote like everyone.

As members of NATO, they have voting rights. That’s one of the good things about NATO.

Ukraine doesn’t have a vote in Russia’s expansion into Ukrainian “territory”, but I’m sure they oppose it.

“So?”

So there will be millions going hungry. Westetn govts not liking Russia wont be an acceptable answer when people with no food come knocking with their pitchforks out.

Better to end this madness now with ceasefire and negotiations.

Russia does not feed the world, so I hardly believe that will happen.

The Ukraine president has been trying to negotiate with Putin, but Putin won’t meet face to face with him. It is also Putin who needs to do the cease firing. I truly believe you are a russian supporter, if not a Putin infiltrator crony.

You make it sound so easy.

You bet many millions will be dying,

It wont be easy for the West to turn around. Invested so much in weapons and sanctions. The EU has had to eat humble pie by not being able to ban russian gas and oil imports and will be forced to change course ofn more sanctions as their economies continue to free fall. Of course this could happen to Putin but it doesn’t look like it at this time. The economy has stabilised with the ruble heading for 50 to the US dollar and banning all things russian has galvanised the Russia people against the west

I think you over estimate the strength of their economy and their resolve. I don’t like defending the capitalist military of the West, but sometimes I have to choose between the lesser of two evils.

The lesser of two evils. WW3 or putting the brakes on NATO. Shouldnt take a nano second to decide

And not a thought about Russia’s aggression. Inconsistent or simply whacked out?

This is the set-up for a great Twilight Zone show. I can just imagine it. Our little Prince waking up in a St. Petersburg army garrison that’s getting ready to be mobilized to Ukraine.

High jinks and hilarity ensues.

What about the real problems we as a global society are facing, any time for that in your thoughts? As opposed to self-created problems.

There’s water, let’s see what else is fundamentally important to people, as opposed to demigods?

To hell with our inability to deal with each other - what about the REAL problems we as a global society are facing, any time for that in your thoughts?

For the past few years, scientists have been frantically sounding an alarm that governments refuse to hear: the global food system is beginning to look like the global financial system in the run-up to 2008.

While financial collapse would have been devastating to human welfare, food system collapse doesn’t bear thinking about. Yet the evidence that something is going badly wronghas been escalating rapidly. The current surge in food prices looks like the latest sign of systemic instability.

Many people assume that the food crisis was caused by a combination of the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine. While these are important factors, they aggravate an underlying problem. For years, it looked as if hunger was heading for extinction. The number of undernourished people fell from 811 million in 2005 to 607 million in 2014. But in 2015, the trend began to turn. Hunger has been rising ever since: to 650 million in 2019, and back to 811 million in 2020. This year is likely to be much worse.

Now brace yourself for the really bad news …

Don’t forget the part about letting Putin roll his tanks into a sovereign democracy and tell them how to run their country and take their resources. How many countries should he be able to control?
