@timb I’m watching it now on Amazon.
Diversity is not only Natural, it is essential for survival.
The greater the diversity the greater the chance for successful survival and procreation. Similarity means the same physical weaknesses and makes everyone vulnerable to a single disease or predator.
The proof can be seen in the dead-end evolution of prokaryotic organisms. There are a few remaining prokaryotic organisms left, but due to their RNA similarity and mode of procreation cloning from a single parent, these are evolutionary dead-ends.
OTOH, the later appearing Eukaryotic organisms needing two parents for fertilization, produce the much more sophisticated growth codes by mixing DNA and receiving the benefits of the genetic strengths (and weaknesses) from the DNA of both parents. This arrangement has produced all the organic species and their varieties we see today all around us.
8.7 million species may inhabit the Earth today. How many have gone extinct is impossible to tell. How many species have just disintegrated and completely disappeared in time.
SPECIES OF THE EARTH
To date, a total of 1.3 million species have been identified and described, but the truth is that many more live on Earth. The most accurate census, conducted by the Hawaii's University, estimates that a total of 8.7 million species live on the planet.May 20, 2018
Fossil Formation
Fossils can form under ideal conditions by preservation, permineralization, molding (casting), replacement, or compression.https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-biology/chapter/evidence-of-evolution/
Under less than ideal conditions, fossils cannot form and just disappear into the mist of time.

This is a rare event.
Cool, hope they keep the time-lapse camera on so we can find out what the fruit looks like.
You should really have smell-a-vision for a corpse plant.
