I think it is especially nuts about the hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. Soap and hot water are more effective than hand sanitizers or alcohol for getting hands clean. I think you are completely off the mark in your promotion of only testing people for COVID-19 if they show symptoms.Surely you recognize that people may get the virus even after their test comes back negative. So, how often should we test? Shall we test everyone in the country right away, and then test again in a month, a week or once a day? Who gets tested first on each round of testing? We have no guarantee that one cannot get the virus twice.
What about the cost? Are the tests part of some free lunch? Let’s say a test costs $175.00. Multiply that by 350,000,000 people and we’re at 61 billion dollars for just the first round.
If you suspect that you have had potentially transmission contact with someone who has COVID-19 – test. Yes? yes.Of course contact your doctor in this case and self-quarantine. It is my understanding that a test can only be requested by a doctor, similar to a prescription. I haven't heard how they're handling that at the drive-by testing sites. I suspect it's more a public relations activity than anything else, and it could be dangerous because as I said before many of those testing negative will feel like they're in the clear to do whatever they want.
The only way we will know the virus has ceased to be a threat is when people stop presenting with symptoms.
One more comment on the virus. There are always contributing factors in the spread of any disease. If the problem gets big enough we dig deep for the answers and it usually turns out to be something which seems obvious after we know it. My impression of living and working conditions in China’s big factory cities is that that everything is crowded, housing, workplaces, mass transportation even the roads and sidewalks. That close contact may be the reason the virus spread so fast there. Those conditions are generally not the same in the US.
I have no idea what the nursing homes are like in Italy. I would guess that most are government supported and with the number of them and the number of patients in each the conditions may not be generally as nice as those in the US. We know Italy has budget problems. I would not be surprised if the nursing homes are crowded and the workers are pushed and if doctors and other health care workers visit multiple facilities in a normal day. This is just my guess, but the theme of crowded conditions could explain their high infection rate.
Answer is anyone who wants it should have the test. Free of chargeWants versus needs. And the free lunch.

All sick people need treatment, not just for their protection, but also for your protection. We are not dealing with a personal disease, this is a communicable disease. Leaving infected persons untreated, poses a threat to EVERYONE!
Testing should absolutely be free of charge to the individual requesting the test, since it will be benefiting society, not the person requesting the test. A test is not a cheeseburger, its utility extends beyond the individual. Of course, it is irrational to expect that a resident be tested every day, that is why there are prerequisites like temperature and other symptoms. Requiring that you prove to have been in contact with another infected person (like they are requiring now) is absurd, there is no way to know if someone who you were in contact with is positive or not if they have not also been tested. The data and numbers as of now are totally skewed to the downside, and thus misrepresentative and misleading (free or not), which does not inspire the public to self quarantine. That is what we need to be doing now, not hanging out at Panera…
The Dems are trying hard to save T rump from his own incompetence. Dems have to pass laws that they think will help people. It’s what they do. So T rump got 8.3 Billion courtesy of the Dems instead of the 2.5 Billion that T rump asked f0r. In the current Bill that goes now to the Senate, various socialistic type actions are going to be approved (just needs Senate approval which will happen because T rump is desperate for it). In that Bill, among other things, is the statement that all COVID-testing will be at no cost to the testee. Other elements of the bill are designed to ease the damages of the coming economic recession. I guess there’s a time for socialism, huh? Ironically, the Dems could insure their election this fall, by simply doing nothing, like the Repubs do. The result of doing nothing would be the worst possible outcome for the country, and the worst of it would all be put at the feet of T rump. But Dems, unlike Repubs, will not stand by and simply obstruct like the Repubs do, just in order to get power. Dems tend to actually need to do something for the people, apparently more than they need to insure taking the next election.

It is IDIOTIC to do (and to have done) otherwise with this virus. It is a STEALTH virus. It passes itself on so productively because it infects carriers who spread it WITHOUT KNOWING THEY ARE EVEN SICK. It spreads from carriers who are ASYMPTOMATIC. Thus testing suspected vectors of disease transmission is the way to SEE where the virus is, where it is transmitting from and to.
So ask yourself, do you want to be an idiot, like T rump, who continues TO THIS DAY, to say that NO ONE should be tested if they do not have symptoms.
Our addressing this crisis is being done BLINDLY because we have not tested people WITHOUT symptoms. And because we are not testing people who are known to have come in contact with a probable carrier. 80 % of COVID-19 infectees DO NOT HAVE particularly significant SYMPTOMS.

BTW, T rump himself was around potential carriers of COVID-19, and has not self-isolated (continues shaking hands) and said that he would not get tested because no one without symptoms should get tested (according to him). Oh, but T rump is a LIAR, in case you haven’t noticed. And the word came out that T rump did get tested. Who knows with a LIAR like him. I wonder if they would tell us if he got a positive test. Maybe they would lie and say he was negative, but was going to self isolate just “in an abundance of caution”.
He allegedly finally took a test and was supposedly negative. I don’t believe he did though. I think it was a case of “let’s say I did and don’t”. He’s been around too many people who have tested positive and shook too many hands for him not to be positive himself. As you said, we know he’s a liar, so I wouldn’t put it past him to lie about taking the test and it’s result. Time will tell because given his age, if he does have the virus, he more than likely can’t be an asymptomatic carrier for more than 14 days. After 14 days and he doesn’t show any outward symptoms and doesn’t pal around with those who test positive, I’ll believe it then. For now I think he’s just trying to placate us and tell us what he thinks we want to hear.
