Whopping Porky Pies!

”Yes, he was, and is, a jolly good guitarist and singer. But, he has for the last 35 years told a lot of whopping porky pies about who did what in Pink Floyd when I was still in charge.” - Roger Waters on David Gilmour

Just a funny quote in an article about a release of a new mix of Pink Floyd’s Animals.

The article has links to more details which are interesting … but that brings me to two points

  1. What do you think about re-mix-re-releases of old stuff? (or even releasing "Previously Unreleased" demo tapes and such?)
  2. Do you really care about the background stories of the members of a band? That so-and-so is fighting with him, or he slept with his wife... or whatever the story - good or bad. (Of course bad makes the headlines)

“Previously Unreleased” rant:

Sometimes it really seems like just a grab for money from the foolishly dedicated. I first got that impression with Led Zeppelin’s Coda. “So here’s some stuff that wasn’t good enough to make it through a cut for release when they were together… but scarcity raises value”…

So now to flip this to #2 … I don’t know what involvement the remaining members had in the release? Was it a strong-arm by the record company? …etc. (and I still don’t care enough to look it up)

So that’s the thing - as entertainment, I’m only interested in what they present to me as their “Product”. All the background noise I could care less about.

“New Mix” rant:

If I’m not expecting it, it drives me crazy!! I’m listening to a familiar song. Mostly everything is the same. But maybe this horn section is louder, or that percussion run is different … or is it… or am I just losing my mind?

Then I look it up and see that it is a “re-Release of …” … Bastages!

However, one that I like is a re-cut of Steely Dan’s … (I think it is FM) that has a different solo break. Everything is the same, but there is a slightly different lead into the solo. (I’ll think of the song when I’m not thinking of it)

“Back Stories” rant:

No…

Well, considering the garbage being produced these days, what other choice is there? ;-)

{Preemptive apology: Serious music people, who listen to it seemingly nonstop, I apologize and I’ll bet there’s a bunch of good stuff out, for the musically educated.

But, for good old rock’n roll emotional backbone grabbing interesting fun rousing music. Gotta go into the old stacks. But then, I’m a simple guy, I don’t have the time, or aptitude, to listen to “interesting” music, if it doesn’t grab me from the inside, I’m off to an interesting audio non-fiction. Well, a good whodunnit is fun too - but I’ve about run out of them. My recent discover and exploration of audiobooks by Author Atwater, the outback half-breed detective Napoleon ‘Boney’ Bonapart , from Australia was cut short by their sudden disappearance from YouTube. }

There is that.

Or, how about those versions by the 70 year old, once teenagers ripping it up, they have me going back to a technically more imperfect version for our long ago memories every time.

Bring it back to the OP

Nick Mason on the State of Pink Floyd: ‘It’s Silly to Still Be Fighting’

“I think it’s really disappointing that these rather elderly gentlemen are still at loggerheads,” the drummer says of Roger Waters and David Gilmour

By ANDY GREENE - Rolling Stone - Dec 10, 2018

Before starting the band (Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets), Nick got the blessing of both David Gilmour and Roger Waters.

The two may not speak to each other much these days, but both have somehow stayed close to Mason.

“It’s a really odd thing in my opinion,” he says, trying to explain their current impasse.

“But I think the problem is Roger doesn’t really respect David. He feels that writing is everything, and that guitar playing and the singing are something that, I won’t say anyone can do, but that everything should be judged on the writing rather than the playing.”
