PSR helped the railroad corporations make record profits. In 2021, revenue for the two largest railroad corporations in the U.S., the Union Pacific and BNSF (owned by Warren Buffett), jumped 12% to $21.8 billion and 11.6% to $22.5 billion, respectively.
Should this have been front and centre of the wsws article?
How about whats included in the letter thats not included heathers piece ?
You heard this from someone who says they want to fight for democracy and human rights. Leave it to the beurocrate to trust when national security is envoked. Saudi arabia would you.
First, I am quite capable of making up my own mind from reliable data.
As to presidential powers;
Emergency Powers
Presidents have access to a dizzying range of powers during a declared emergency. We’re working to enhance Congress’s role as a check against abuse of authority. Emergency Powers
IOW, there is oversight and remedies if abuse of presidential powers occurs. The current litigation of Donal Trump (ex-president) addresses just such abuse of presidential powers.
In the case of a threatened national rail workers strike, the use of executive power was justified as evidenced by the lack of criticism the US Congress and Senate or even from the Republican party.
OTOH , the Republican party is threatening to shut down the government altogether when it comes into power in a few weeks. Not from any valid motive , but from the sheer intoxication and exercise of power.
Now there would be an example of Congressional authoritarianism and overreach of democratic principles.
Threatening to place the Nation into default with its creditors is a serious matter and NOT good government.
And what does this have to do with Political power?
Seems to me this has to do with unrestricted Corporate power.
Unfortunately, Democracy does not prevent Big Business from maximizing profits and there is room to fix some SCOTUS rulings in regard to facilitating business practices.
You’re just spouting dog whistles regardless if they are pertinent to the discussion.
My mistake on the quote. It seems like a point we would agree is important, not argue about. Not sure what the problem is now. Maybe if you stopped the ad hominems, that would help.
Not sure what you were trying to prove here. You asked to quote a section from Richardson and it was given and thats where it seems to have ended. What was your point in this exercise? Do you even have one?
Agree with the sentiment but not the right to strike is disingenuous to the well being of every worker out there fighting for better working conditions Fake support.
Nothing fake about the threat of halting the nation’s commerce. That is real!
But as long as there are no “profit” restrictions on the employers, the workers should have the right to the only weapon that can force restriction on wage exploitation, i.e. halt work.
Moreover, if the government can force workers to remain in the job for national security reasons, it should also have the right to force the empluyers to pay their workers fair wages. A “minimum wage w/benefits” for a “necessary workforce”. After all that can only be considered “negotiated employment”.
Capitalism is a good investment incentive, fair wages is a good employment incentive (Henry Ford?)
