Head of US Central Command says collapse of the Afghan government can be traced to US troop withdrawal deal.

Senior military officials in the United States have linked the collapse of the Afghan government and its security forces in August to former President Donald Trump’s deal with the Taliban in 2020 promising a complete withdrawal of US troops.
General Frank McKenzie, the head of Central Command, told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that once the US troop presence was pushed below 2,500 as part of Washington’s bid to complete a total withdrawal by the end of August, the unravelling of the US-backed Afghan government accelerated.
I have watched the speech of Putin, streamed and translated by French TV. And analysts gave some explanations.
There are 3 points, none of them reassuring.
- He gave a short history of Ukraine, since the October revolution. For him, Ukraine has always been a part of Russia. The creation of a federal state composed of states having their own nationality rules was a mistake. then he goes on.
In fact, he deprives Ukraine of any legitimacy and right to exist as an independent state.
- He criticizes Maidan and every government which came into power since, as corrupt, without any respect for the agreements concluded.
Telling this he deprives the Ukraine government of any right and legitimacy.
- Then the most worrying is the last point. Not only he recognizes the independence of Eastern Ukraine provinces, but he claims their right to get eastern Ukraine territories where Russian speaking people live and warns Ukraine that when the new states act to get back these lands, any bloodshed will be Ukraine sole responsibility.
Honestly,
a) i am not sure i understood everything, but if i understood rightly, we have every reason to worry.
b) even if he has no lesson about honesty, and respect of human rights, and even if he tells a very partial history, he is not fully wrong in his critics of the Ukraine government and his wrongs,
c) The diplomacy tempted by Europe was useless as Putin had decided a long time ago. his speech shows that his aim is to rebuilt a Russian empire. And USA government was right when he told that Putin was only waiting for the end of the Olympic games, as agreed with China.
d) We are back in cold war and Putin acts and speaks in the frame of it. We can be happy that
Biden be at the helm, as he masters the langage and the rituals.
I have began to read a very interesting paper in the USA Time magazine of the 14th of February 2022 which tells the story of the relationship between Ukraine and Russia, not fully condemning Putin.

The problem was not in withdrawing Americans from Afghanistan but the safe escort of Afghanistanis from Afghanistan, without getting engaged in a shooting war with the Taliban.
I didn’t watch the speech. I thought Putin would have brought up the The Minsk Protocol. Where in 2014 it was agreed to let the people vote. Instead the US would not move forward with the Minsk Protocol. Barack Obama frame of mind with his apologizing tour for being American signed the Minsk Protocol agreement that basically allowed a vote by the people to leave Ukraine. That should have been one of Putin’s key points.
Yes, that is a problem if you are trying to make the 9/11 deadline for Biden’s speech. But not a problem if you take the time to do it right.

And how long is time to do it right, when in your first year of presidency and dealing with a country that is in the throes of a pandemic with tens of thousands dying at home and insufficient hospitals and resources to deal with that.
