For inauguration, Trump embraces the religious leaders who embraced him
Some come from a protestant faith tradition long associated with the real estate mogul: “prosperity gospel,” which holds that God rewards faithful Christians with financial success, and that one’s wealth is a sign of God’s approval.
Speaks for itself, doesn’t it? It very neatly sums up the roots of Republican philosophy. If you’re wealthy it’s a sign that God favors you. If you’re poor it’s a sign he doesn’t–and government should follow suit. Poverty is a spiritual flaw. If you’re poor it’s your own fault’ if you’re rich it’s because you did the right thing. It also contains the handy Republican philosophy that the wealthy should be able to hold onto their own wealth and the godforsaken poor should not expect handouts.
