GRETA AT THE UN. CAPITALISM HAS DESTROYED OUR WORLD

Wow Greta really let it rip at the UN. Trump said he would not go but was there. Wasn’t sure about Greta pushing the green growth wheelbarrow but from this she is directly attacking the capitalism.

This might be a bridge to far for the likes of Timb Tee and lausten

I missed the part where Greta was an anti capitalist champion. I saw a 16 yr old (who looks more like 15) who appears to be quite appropriately outraged at the failure of world leadership to address climate change.

Must be your selective hearing. Did you miss the part about endless economic growth technology as the solution and BAU??

Here’s what Greta said:

https://www.npr.org/2019/09/23/763452863/transcript-greta-thunbergs-speech-at-the-u-n-climate-action-summit

Climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, addressed the U.N.'s Climate Action Summit in New York City on Monday. Here’s the full transcript of Thunberg’s speech, beginning with her response to a question about the message she has for world leaders.

"My message is that we’ll be watching you.

"This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!

"You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!

"For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.

"You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil. And that I refuse to believe.

"The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees [Celsius], and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.

"Fifty percent may be acceptable to you. But those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of equity and climate justice. They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.

"So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us — we who have to live with the consequences.

"To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5 degrees global temperature rise – the best odds given by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] – the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on Jan. 1st, 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons.

"How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just ‘business as usual’ and some technical solutions? With today’s emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less than 8 1/2 years.

"There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today, because these numbers are too uncomfortable. And you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.

"You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.

"We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.

“Thank you.”

Player, like Jesus said: “forgive the idiot bastards for they haven’t a clue . . .”

Have teenage histrionics ever changed minds before?

  1. CC - quoting Jesus? Should we pray?
thatoneguy: "Have teenage histrionics ever changed minds before?"
Holy bat poop, are you blind as a bat man? Can't you see what teenage histrionics have done for the Tea Party and Bannon and Trump Nation and Murdoch's and Koch's (et. al) interests. Who the f is kidding whom you silly.

Not to mention the new USA’s Russianized Republikan Parti.

CC – quoting Jesus? Should we pray?
Who knows, think praying did the dinosaurs any good? You can pour on the derision, and idiotic dismissals all you like, but the reality is coming home to all of us, it will reach your home no matter how much Dunning-Kruger you've saturated it with.
The voice of an aware and very justifiably pissed off teenager. Okay she won't save us, but at least she's speaking truth to power:

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. What would change your mind one guy?

C.c Do you agree with what she is proposing here? The enormity of what needs to be done??

No, I’m an old pissed off guy, been watching this circus of lying and ruthless intimidation by the faith-shackled contrarians and I have also been learning about our planet these many decades. Back in the 60s, 70s, 80s we had a chance to soberly assess the reality of increasing human population, consumption and pollution production pressures and Earth’s inability to support all of us and it, especially if we continued showing zero concern for the way natural systems operate. All most, especially Christians wanted was to consume everything fast as possible. That’s great till we get towards the end of the party.

Seems to me the only turning around we’ll be doing, is adjusting to the hospice phase and figuring out how to get right with our imminent self destruction, that will be humanity’s next great adventure. I used to think that wouldn’t be happening in my life time, but considering the global situation I’m not so sure anymore.

From learning about human history and the many rise and falls, I know that downfalls tend to happen when things are at their greatest ever, then suddenly the supports and foundation starts quaking, then shit hits the fan rather fast.

Why not turn our focus towards nurturing the biosphere that supplies our life support system, it could easily be done within a capitalistic system - (but not in an increasingly oligarch run economy) - it seemed such a no-brainer. Now the runway behind us won’t be doing us any good.

Turned out we didn’t have any brains left once Hollywood filled our heads with its pipe-dreams.

Limitless growth was something about as insane as that successful player Ayn Rand and her kindergarten “philosophy” of ME First.

But the players bought it lock stock’n barrel. Why we ask. Simply because they didn’t, don’t, give a damn about anything but their own ego and belly.

and so on and so forth . . .

Oh and lets not forget about the huge difference between all the other rise and falls and this time.

Now we truly are talking about our entire biosphere as we know and depend on it.

Won’t be any other landmasses to escape to, as has been humanity’s course these past millennia.

(Yes of course don’t happen every where simultaneously. Always regional. It’ll be Russian-weather roulette, political military insanity actualized, business driven catastrophe and such. A steadily increasing rate of disintegration’s. There’ll be some really bad days with survivors, until there aren’t anymore. It ain’t like it’s not happened before. Earth can take it, we can’t. )

You selectively overgeneralize bits of phrases and such to buttress your extremist perspective.

But I wanted to say that Greta has been going about with a pretty consistently flat affective presentation, but she did not hold back her passion in the above link. And that’s good I think. I worry about her though. She is just a kid.

That 1st comment in my last post was meant for Player.

I also wanted to respond to Oneguy’s question about histrionic girls making a difference. 1) That French girl who riled up and led a rebellion of some sort, back in history. and 2) that Lindsey Graham when she dove in with her histrionics, to save the day when all seemed lost for the Beermeister Kavanaugh’s chance to be approved as a SCOTUS Justice.

You disagree that endless economic growth needs to be challenged?

And I called this one Timb. She had gone to far for your liking

This might be a bridge to far for the likes of Timb Tee and lausten
Why would you think I would think that?

The only problem I have is she is addressing this to politicians. I would have been more hopeful that they got the message if they would have sat there quietly when she was done instead of applauding her. They were acting like the People’s Front of Judea, having a meeting about how nothing is getting done.

Don’t that about sum it up.

And what was that hysterical girl saying anyways?
