This is one of those “I hate to ask, but holy shit things have a chance of getting very bad, so I’d better ask” kind of deals. On another board I post at, there’s a transgender member who lives in Mississippi who broke her neck while on the job at Walmart. At present, she’s in the hospital, doped up on a huge amount of drugs, and it is iffy if she’s going to be able to have a normal life. Her family isn’t at all supportive of her deciding that “he is a she” and my main concern is that the combination of shithead family and overwhelming debt due to medical bills is going to lead to her committing suicide once she gets of out the hospital.
If anyone is in the area and knows of a group who supports LGBTQ individuals and can pass that information on to me, I’d be eternally grateful. Indeed, any advice would be helpful, because I’m given to believe that the rest of her family is so twisted in their mindset that they think folks like Rush Limbaugh are flaming liberals.

Mississippi will not come into the 20th Century even in her lifetime. Her main goal after getting well is to get as far away fom Mississippi as she can. Overwhelming debt from meical bills should not be a problem. She should declare bankruptcy. I doubt she'd have any trouble qualifying. Lois
Bankruptcy isn’t an option for her, since she had to file for it when the economy imploded and you have to wait 7 years before you can file again (unless you’re a corporation, then you can file every year).
You’re right about Mississippi being a barren wasteland, though. I’ve checked with people I know who’re heavily involved with the LGBTQ community in their area (as well as having some contact with folks who work at the national level) and they’ve all come up with nothing. I know members of the message board have offered to help pay the costs for her to move out of the state in the past (she’s had to refuse, due to the fact that she’s been unable to sell the house as the market is extremely depressed), perhaps this will remove that stumbling block for her.
Just a side note. I saw the results of some studies a year or so ago, probably in the Economist, that documented that many of the people who left New Orleans after Katrina had much improved lives, better jobs and the kids were doing better in school.

In the “Holy Kevin Bacon!” Department, I have this bit of good news: I posted a similar thread on another board, someone there got in touch with me saying that they had friends who ran an atheist charity in MS, who might be able to help, and it turns out that they and the transwoman are friends on Facebook, so it looks like we’ll be able to get her help from people who’re at least respectful of her, even if they’re not in the same minority status.
