You think you had a tough day at work?

Ship Hits Brooklyn Bridge
May 18, 2025
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano — a maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner — discusses the Mexican Navy sail training ship Cuauhtemoc’s collision with the Brooklyn Bridge and what may have caused the accident.

It’s not often that serious ship disasters, especially when hitting bridges and such, can be looked at later with light hearted humor.

I’d always dreamed about being able to climb up masts and try my hand at rigging sails with a team, but the mountains got in the way. This would have been one heck of an exciting day on the job.

Kind of a drastic training exercise, wouldn’t you say?

People are dead or seriously hurt.

2 dead and 4 in critical condition but its a tough day at work meme

Even worse - an exciting day

Excuse me, hadn’t heard that news. That is sad.

Well yeah, exciting and sometimes people die.
That’s why it’s helpful to be thankful for every day you got.
We grieve our losses and move on.

You expect guarantees?

Hopefully this is just a juan time thing for the Mexican navy.

Well yeah, some days pack more of a thrill than others.

Weren’t you a merchant mariner back in the day? Any good stories?

Sal has started a new feature, WHAT THE SHIP !

Yes, 19 people were seriously injured and a couple died, that is sad, especially for them and their loved ones.
I don’t belittle that. But death is part of life. No?

And I sure hope you embrace OSHA and safety regulations.

The incident was a nightmare for those stuck on that ship, and the tug crews, that were supposed to be guiding that ship out of the dock and into the seaway. Still, watching from the outside, it was a bit of comedy. With more injuries than a first glance would indicate. My bad.

Still shit happens when engaged in dangerous jobs. What do you expect guarantees?
