What do you guys think about the Hare Krishna Cult ?

I have some strong views about it … not sure if this is of interest to this group .

Sure, shoot. Lois

I think they are rather odd folks who used to try to give out fliers or whatnot at airports and in New Orleans. And I think that they chant “hare rama… hare Krishna… Krishna Krishna… hare hare… etc”.
That’s about all I know about them. And it is good, I think that I know so little about them, in that it suggests that they probably are not big trouble makers. But, not knowing, perhaps they are just particularly sneaky.

I’m indifferent. I don’t know squat about them.

I had a friend of a friend go to one of their introductory “camps”. She didn’t like it and left. I also had one approach me on campus in 1987. He didn’t say he was Hare Krishna at first, he said he had some survey questions. They were leading questions about spirituality, ending with “Would you like to get together with some people and explore these questions further?” Pretty said recruitment technique and the guy was unnaturally shy, bordering on creepy. Did not leave me with a good impression of them.

My only involvement was in college. They hosted a get together where they served free food and non-alcoholic drink. It was very pleasant, no one was pushy. The little I did read from their literature struck me as new-agey, spiritual mumbo-jumbo, the usual. BUT one thing you have to admit…have you ever heard of one bombing an abortion clinic? Burning non-Hare K’s at the stake?

It sounds like a cult!
AFAIK, the cult became well known when hippy rock stars in the late 60s-early 70s began looking for spiritual fulfillment after coming down hard from drug abuse. I imagine many people who have joined were either on drugs, or recovering addicts. Similar to virtually all cults.

It's a cult but at least they're not killing anyone. Their dancing on public sidewalks doesn't bother me. They don't seem to accost anyone, and they don't come to the door. My experience leads me to take a live and let live attitude. Has anyone here had a bad experience with them? Lois

Wasn't there some sexual abuse? Not little children, but older men manipulating younger women? And a few lavish lifestyles of supposedly ascetic leaders. But, yeah, pretty tame compared to today.

Older men manipulating women is endemic in groups. It happens frequently in Christian churches, too. Probably in all religious groups and a lot of secular ones, too, which may not be preaching against it but like to present themselves as above it. It's more a matter of intrinsic male predatory behavior than anything else. Lois
