This is a central question that we face as a country, especially its consequences for American policies on Ukrainian sanctions, on the issue of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, on the trustworthiness of our United States intelligence agencies, recently also on the contretemps over possible Russian bounties for the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan and finally on the US presidential election.
As these scandals flare and recede into the next crisis, our focus on solving this mystery seems to subside as well. We must not lose our attentiveness to what is behind Trumpās baffling relationship with Putin ā our national security depends on it.

Trumpās threat to democratic institutions and the rule of law is not a matter of conjecture. The former president is telling the country exactly what heād do if he becomes only the second former commander in chief ā after Grover Cleveland in 1892 ā to win a second, non-consecutive term.
Simply put, Trump is running on the most extreme platform in modern history. He has called for the termination of the Constitution. He wants the Supreme Court to grant unchecked power to the presidency, which he plans to use in a personal quest for āretributionā against his enemies. He is pledging to gut the civil service in government departments and to fill posts with political operatives. Heās signaled heād use the Justice Department not as a quasi-independent arbiter of the rule of law but as a personal political enforcement machine. Many of Trumpās former officials fear heād pull out of NATO, trash the post-World War II international system and side with dictators.
He says undocumented immigrants are āpoisoning the bloodā of the country and vows mass deportations and detention camps. Heās drawn allusions to 1930s dictators by calling his opponents āvermin.ā On Tuesday night, an ex-president who has already incited violence to achieve his ends warned supporters that if he didnāt win in November, āWeāre not going to have a country.ā
It was once fashionable for Trump apologists to chide those who took his threats literally.
And why do regular Americans love him? Because they are so filled with hatred for their neighbors? Because they see themselves as superior humans who should have special laws enshrining their superiority for eternity? Or something like that.
