The Black Panthers, for political reasons, started the Free Breakfast program in 1969 at an Episcopal Church in Oakland. The USDA had launched pilot breakfast program in school since the mid 1960s. I am not knocking any charitable deed. Regardless of the motive, free food for poor kids is always a good thing.
Free food is always good thing no matter who started it. Healthy food is a human right and a human need. It would be inhumane to allow anyone to starve to death and actually, IMO, like health care is a human right and we should have socialized medicine, I think we should all have access to healthy food (fruits, vegetables, etc, not junk food like pizza and potato chips), no matter how much money we do or do not make.

The USDA spent some $13.8 billion in 2018 on school lunches. And schools are loaded with debt because parents are not paying for the meals their kids ate. School lunch debts amount to tens of millions of dollars and climbing along with the other trillion dollar student debt. The Michelle Obama fancy lunch changes in 2015 had driven up the cost of school lunches. The Trump cut back is necessary to feed kids first before feeding them fancy. Instead of giving that $1.5 trillion to the Department of Defense for the military, Trump should have directed that money to the Department of Education.
Sree, fruits and vegetables are not fancy. Michelle Obama was not feeding kids fancy. She was feeding them healthy meals. Feeding kids crap, like hamburgers and french fries, won’t help them learn in school or grow up healthy. The dotard doesn’t need to cut back on school meals. The T rump tax cut for the already exorbitantly wealthy, has pushed our national debt to record levels. So scrounging pennies from kids’ school meals, is seen as a good way to deal with the debt, along with considering cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, along with scrapping almost 100 environmental protections, along with getting rid of consumer protections, etc. etc.
But be at peace, the exorbitantly wealthy are getting all of the fruits and vegetables their greedy hearts desire. Maybe it will trickle down and we can salvage some only partially digested fruits and vegetables from their feces, for the school children.

No one is 100% free. My mother had a saying, “Your freedom ends at my nose” meaning if it does harm you don’t have the right to do that to anything or anyone. You can’t walk into someone’s home and start throwing things around or breaking things. It’s an unspoken rule and it’s not socially acceptable to do so. Not feeding kids healthy foods is doing them harm. Everyone has the right to shelter, clothing, health care, a real education, safety, clean water, and healthy food. Nothing is wrong with PTO/PTAs, but smart and caring parents would not allow their kids to be fed junk food, not even with school lunches. To do so would be neglect. For a society to function though, there has to be rules, but they have to be humane. No one has the freedom (or they shouldn’t) to go into a school and start shooting and no one should have the freedom to neglect our children while they are in charge of them for the day. Children (and parents/guardians/grandparents for their kids) have the right to learn in an environment that is free of harm and neglect. You don’t have the right to deny it.
