One of the things about becoming an Adult is that one realizes the big world out there really does exist, as in it’s an actual factual touchable thing – it’s not in my head, it’s real people, way the f too many of them, but real nonetheless. --CC
For some reason, I saw this on a sitcom once and it stuck. A kid was home sick and his dad walks in and the kid says, "Dad, I'm looking out this window, and people are driving by, and going somewhere! While I'm in school every day, there's a whole world out there."

The Dad called it “the third realization of Camus”, then the kid said “Shamu”, but anyway, it was funny. I never did find a list of realizations by Camus though.

@thatoneguy

No question there is a big risk of economic catastrophe, but we can’t ignore the virus. The Risk Management thread is about some professor who says we need to find a way to keep the economy running while remaining locked down.
No one can fight with one hand tied behind his back. The economy is either up and running or it’s locked down. Imagine a pride of lions not hunting. They can’t fool themselves, as we are doing, with a relief bill by creating $2 trillion out of thin air. The US (Treasury) is printing money to lend itself in order to prop up companies and feed people not working. For how long? A stalled economy is like a human body that has stopped breathing. The time of onset of rigor mortis is 1 to 6 hours. If we don’t start up by Easter, it’s curtains. No one will be spared except small farmers and doomsday preppers living off the grid.

We have to ignore not the virus but the body count. The attritional rate estimated, by Fauci, is 1 in 1000. That’s a whole lot better than the Alamo.

1% is 1 in 100, not 1 in 1000.

Re: your idea about the economy.

I agree with your apparent concern about trillions of dollars being created out of thin air (or as I say, pulled out of our national a-hole). BTW, now the DOTUS says that it is up to $6 trillion, in just this Bill. (I think that has something to do with big corps having options to access funds, in some way, that could add up to another 4 trillion. IDK, some shenanigan like that.)

This 2.2 or 6 trillion dollar Act of Congress, only puts our “economy” on life support, and the next payment on the ventilator (of 2-6 trillions of dollars) may be coming due in 5-6 weeks. And, consider this, in 5-6 weeks, from now, we will be so ravaged by COVID-19 that Congress will again rush to approve however many trillions anyone suggests. (IDK if this will happen, but it could. It might.) But that will only leave the economy on life support, again. IOW, the economy cannot be stimulated to grow back, very well, while it is still on life support. But it has to be in this induced coma, until the virus is controlled, or it would suffer anyway, and more will die (on top of the more that have already died because we did not take actions quickly enough or effectively enough.)

The economy is shut down because the virus is not under control. Opening the economy (as it was) serves to allow the virus to spread. But your thought is that we must save the economy, by opening it up on Easter. That doesn’t make sense. (Easter is just a soundbite for T rump to toss to his evangelicals.) The mighty embodiment of Cyrus the Great has the Mantle of Heaven and with the power of Almighty God directing his hand will RESURRECT the economy. All can gather and spend together once again… NOT!!!

The economy is either up and running or it’s locked down.
sree, so you still think we are in control.

Good luck with that one.

I keep trying to explain to Republican Meat Heads that physical reality don’t give a flying fart what you think you need.

I just looked at an article that indicates the different partisan beliefs that Dems/Repugs have. The Repugs tend to maintain their partisan beliefs even when the reality impinges upon them in places where the rate of COVID-19 outbreak is high.

@sree

We have to ignore not the virus but the body count.

you’re ignoring the fact that these bodies are human beings. We can NOT ignore the body count. 2.2 million or more is horrific and to let the virus run rampid is inhumane and horrifying. Forcing people to go back to work and face death in order to save the economy won’t work. It won’t even get the dotard re-elected. He will be a mass murder. Oh wait. He already is with Latino immigration. What’s 2.2 million more? It might even be even more.

Start up by Easter? Oh yes, what if you get it and die? Oh yes, I forgot, you’ll allow yourself to die, as a sacrifice. No, that’s not a sacrifice and allowing people to die will only make the economy worse too. How? Out of the 2.2 million isn’t just grandma and grandpa. It isn’t the mentally impaired they let die if they get it, like some hospitals are thinking in a couple of states. It’s also young people and workers. You have dead workers, you have a workforce loss which means production loss. Sick people are not as productive and dead bodies are not productive. “Packed churches on Easter” is NOT beautiful during a pandemic. It’s insane!

Europe is more civilized in that citizens don’t have to worry about health care. They have it. They don’t have worry about their jobs if they get sick and so much more. However, even letting the virus run rampid is also bad for Europe too, as seen in Italy. More people die because hospitals end up getting overwhelmed.

The economy isn’t important when citizens are too sick to work and are dying. We have to get the people well and then worry about the economy. Health care is more important than forcing people to go back to work and work while sick, spreading a deadly illness.

Here’s a couple of videos for you- one is Bernie Sanders and the other is Ring of Fire.

Feeding corporate greed is not how you get an economy going again, especially if you truly care about human life. You have to take care of the people first and then work on getting the economy going again. Feeding corporate greed will not save lives nor will it save the economy in the long run or get the dotard re-elected. IMHO, he’s beyond re-election (even though I never voted for him), because if he gets his way, the death toll will be so high, that we’ll lose not only many citizens, but many in government too. People don’t like a president who let’s people die without trying to save lives. Sad thing is, the dotard is so into himself and wants to be worshiped, that he’s not see that this virus could kill him too. Either that or he thinks he’s invincible. He’s not. He’s going to mess around with this virus and find he’s in the hospital dying with his buddies. Unless of course, he hides out in a bunker until it all passes. Won’t change the fact that he’d be a murderer many times over.

Except for his Trump Card.

The pig has the brass balls to cancel the election - and I don’t see anyone in these supposedly United States of America who has the cojones to do a damned thing about it, or him.

I find the prospect of American sheople, rolling over and normalizing such a decision the same way they have rolled over for every other one of trump’s avaricious, stupidity-based USA constitutional atrocities.

That seems way more likely than some sudden enlightenment. The asses (oops I meant masses) are now too scared, when not terrified, to think straight, not that they ever were thinking too straight during my life time of watching this American Glutfest Insanity unfolding these past decades.

Oh and Mriana, please, please, please no more pictures of the American Traitor in Chief,

I’m down to one computer, don’t need the monster blowing up this one.

The Repugs tend to maintain their partisan beliefs even when the reality impinges upon them
Right. Hasn't that become their standard operating procedure one every f'n thing, quite a while ago? Then came the Nixon/Reagan political operatives and everyone said - cool if dirty tricks and dishonest works, we are all in. Fuck the future, it's ME FIRST and my party we're going to focus all our energies and treasure into.

So stuupppppiiiiiiiid, so self destructive, and all the passive bystanders, now you get to go on the same ride as those who truly deserve every atrocity coming into our/their lives these next months and years.

Think of the moral intellectual contortions needed to over look Trump’s personal track record and criminality BEFORE THE ELECTION, a track record that made it absolutely clear to any thinking honest person with a gram of objectivity left inside - that this narcissistic juvenile delinquent would be an unspeakable disaster for America, its citizens and the world and everyone’s future.

@citizenchallengev3

Oh and Mriana, please, please, please no more pictures of the American Traitor in Chief,

Sorry, I didn’t have a choice in the pic that showed. I wish I had then I’d get rid of that ugly orange mug.

I heard on the radio, and I’m trying to figure out the exact statutes, but I think if for whatever reason, a Presidential election is not held in November, both Trump’s and Pence’s terms would still end. I suppose anyone he appointed would also be out, maybe not. The succession laws would then take over. States could still hold elections, so there would still be legitimate Representatives, and the Speaker of the House would be next in line.

Idk. I think the picture above captures at least some of T rump’s true ugliness. And I am all for exposing the ugly truth.

I certainly hope you are right @lausten. I really don’t want that dotard in office for another second, but I have to wait for the Presidential election. I can’t wait for it, because I want him and his cronies out.

Oh the wonders of technology. Would be much more fun if it weren’t also destroying our Earth, because of our self-certain stupidity, but that’s a different story.

Have you seen this video?

They can visualize cell phone loads as they change in time. Even niftier, they were able to isolate one beach at the height of spring break and then, followed those phones for the next few days. And so it it, and so it goes.

This is the shit experts understood, and everyone else ignored. Will being able to visualize help people learn any lessons? In any event, it’s impressive and its stark and COVID-19 will run it’s course, and life will continue at a new plateau, though not a higher on, until the next hits. Reminds me of dad during his last few years, every trip to the hospital brought home a dad who was operating at a slightly lower level. Hell, don’t need to look that far. It’s been the same for me, adjusting to the new reality of an aging body, that can not do what it used to, and you’d best make peace with and accommodate or it will kill you. But, I digress, I was talking about our interconnected interdependent world, that’s sadly in the first phase of fragmentation. Our much vaunted global economy connected will turn out to be a bubble because, too few took the details seriously.

While the rest were busy partying expecting others to do all the work and pay the bills. The sanctimonious superior self-certain religious right, with their Prosperity Doctrine pimping Jesus for treasure, are as guilty as the sports loving Los Vegas, Hollyworld crowd, no f’n difference in actual substance.

Cell Phone Tracking Analysis Shows Where Florida Springbreakers and New Yorkers Fleeing Coronavirus Went to Next

Common Dreams

By Eoin Higgins

A viral video showing cell phone data collected by location accuracy company X-Mode from spring break partiers potentially spreading the coronavirus around the U.S. has brought up questions of digital privacy even as it shows convincingly the importance of staying home to defeat the disease.

“First thing you should note is the importance of social distancing,” tweeted Daily Dot journalist Mikael Thalen of the video. “The second is how much data your phone gives off.”

The data in the video, which X-Mode fed into mapping platform Tectonix, shows people from one Florida beach over spring break departing the Sunshine State and spreading around the country, mostly to the Northeast.

Oh then all the talk about the election, suddenly November is looking very far aware.

I now have a new terror, trump cancels the elections and Democrats remain as neutered and impotent as ever and America normalizes the new normal. Then the Kochs and Murdochs and Mercers can take their rightful seats in the trump Cabinet. Who’s to stop it from happening? Just musing as I’m sipping my tea.

But, then again hope is survival strategy in hopeless times, so strive we most. Democrats no matter how inept are still the only option in town and they at least give lip service to facts and honesty and listening to actual learned experts. All Democratic politicians really need to fix their problems is an informed and engaged electorate, ready to stand behind them and push.

It’s what the American way used to be all about. You know, a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, and all that apple pie and moonshine stuff.

If you’re in hurry skip ahead to 0:35 on that video

That Trevor Noah video was pretty good, nothing funny, Trevor has his serious reporting hat on. It fits.

That was interesting to see the spread of the phone users who gathered on the crowded Florida beach.

I have also recently seen videos by a company that map tracks atypical changes in the number of people with fevers. They seem to have some predictive value re: the rates of COVID-19 infections.
