NUNES MEMO - Memo release is Trump's scramble to torch threats to himself – and his circle

round and round he goes where he’ll end up nobody knows

Memo release is Trump's scramble to torch threats to himself – and his circle Tom McCarthy in New York and David Smith in Washington Sat 3 Feb 2018 https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/03/memo-release-is-trumps-scramble-to-torch-threats-to-himself-and-his-circle? Asked on Friday whether he still had confidence in Rosenstein, whom he himself appointed, Trump told reporters: “You figure that one out." The president is trying “to torch institutions that pose a threat," said Benjamin Wittes, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution thinktank in Washington and editor-in-chief of the Lawfare blog. “I don’t think there’s any gentle way to say that." But Andrew Wright, a former White House associate counsel and a professor at Savannah Law School, warned that by seeking to influence or discredit investigators, Trump was only deepening his predicament.
Obstruction of justice in the political sense, where Trump is mired now, it’s like quicksand – you can’t better your own situation by thrashing around. The only thing you can do is be still and wait for someone else to bail you out. The problem for the president is he keeps thrashing around, and he keeps sinking further into the mire and muck.

Carter Page Touted Kremlin Contacts in 2013 Letter

By MASSIMO CALABRESI and ALANA ABRAMSON 7:05 PM EST http://time.com/5132126/carter-page-russia-2013-letter/ Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page bragged that he was an adviser to the Kremlin in a letter obtained by TIME that raises new questions about the extent of Page’s contacts with the Russian government over the years. The letter, dated Aug. 25, 2013, was sent by Page to an academic press during a dispute over edits to an unpublished manuscript he had submitted for publication, according to an editor who worked with Page. “Over the past half year, I have had the privilege to serve as an informal advisor to the staff of the Kremlin in preparation for their Presidency of the G-20 Summit next month, where energy issues will be a prominent point on the agenda," the letter reads. Carter Page is at the center of a controversial memo from Republican Congressman Devin Nunes, released this week. The Nunes memo claims that in Oct. 2016 the FBI improperly received court permission to spy on Page, whom Trump had named as an adviser to his campaign in March 2016. ... ... cts. The Steele dossier claims that during a trip to Moscow in July 2016, Page held secret meetings with a senior Kremlin official and a senior Putin ally that included conversations about helping Trump and hurting Hillary Clinton in the presidential campaign. The Steele dossier does not identify its sources and Page has denied any wrongdoing (don't they always. Sociopath is as sociopath does.)

Here’s the Democratic response

http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/TODAY/z_Creative/inline-headers/FINAL DRAFT -- Dear Colleague on Nunes Memo.pdf I. The FISA court found probable cause to believe that Carter Page is an agent of a foreign power. Nothing in the Nunes memo rules out the possibility that considerable evidence beyond the Steele dossier helped the court reach that conclusion. II. Christopher Steele is a recognized expert on Russia and organized crime. III. The Nunes memo provides no credible basis whatsoever for removing Rod Rosenstein as Deputy Attorney General. IV. The Nunes memo shows that House Republicans are now part and parcel to an organized effort to obstruct the Special Counsel’s investigation. Additional Background Christopher Steele served as an intelligence officer with British intelligence service MI6 from 1987 until his retirement in 2009. From 1990 to 1992, he worked under diplomatic cover as an MI6 agent in the Embassy of the United Kingdom to Russia. By 2006, Steele headed the Russia Desk at MI6. He remains one of the world’s foremost experts on Russia—and, in particular, connections between the Russian government and organized crime. In September 2015, the conservative Washington Free Beacon retained the services of Fusion GPS to conduct opposition research on Donald Trump. When President Trump emerged as the Republican candidate, the Clinton Campaign and the Democratic National Committee hired Fusion GPS for the same services. As part of this project, Christopher Steel produced what became known as the Steele dossier. Carter Page was known to the United States government for his involvement with the Russian government long before he joined the Trump campaign. Court documents show that Russian intelligence operatives attempted to recruit Page in 2013. One spy thought that Page was “an idiot" who wants to “rise up" and “earn lots of money." Then-candidate Donald Trump named Page a part of the Trump campaign’s foreign policy team on March 21, 2016. In July 2016, with the explicit approval of the Trump campaign, Page traveled to Moscow to give a speech on “the future of the world economy" and to meet with Russian officials. Despite several public accounts of these meetings, Page would later deny any contact with the Russian government. By August 2016—when it had become apparent that the Russian government was working to undermine the election—the Trump campaign began to distance itself from Carter Page. Later reports show that, in testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, Page admitted to meeting with Russian officials and to briefing at least one “senior person" on the Trump campaign about those meetings. None of this information relies upon the Steele dossier. The relevant legal standard for evaluating the FISA application is laid out in Franks v. Delaware. “[T]here is, of course, a presumption of validity with respect to the affidavit supporting the search warrant." 438 U.S. 154, 171.

Three posting and still no clear idea of what you are trying to say. Can you make a point in plain English please? Are you saying that Russia was trying to stop Trump from becoming president?

I wasn't trying to say anything I was sharing those news items that speak for themselves pretty good. I was curious to see if anyone wanted to discuss them. Mike, I don't know much about it beyond basic facts as reported. Nunes is a passionate absolutist partisan of the first order, along with some like minded he created this committee "memo" pretty much in secret. Officials (outside the trump circle) familiar with the facts, all seem to agree it's one sided and ignores a great deal. There even seems to be evidence Nunes tampered with the memo the White House okayed, or some such weird shenanigans. What it tell me? Well, it's another example of these new Republicans absolute disregard for our National Interest, or the concerns and need of We The People whom the government is supposed to serve. Another example of ruthlessly pushing the Alt-right's self-interest blinded dogma. It's all about winning political battles no matter the underhanded treachery and lies that need to employed. Since you brought it up, allow me to share a little more from folks who do understand the details and the background. They get to the heart of the matter, and I hope they manage to answer your question.
The Backward Logic of the Nunes Memo By Jonathan Chait - February 2nd, 2018 http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/02/the-backward-logic-of-the-nunes-memo.html Amid all the lies Donald Trump has told about the Russia scandal, there is one underlying truth: The intelligence community truly fears him and considers him unfit for the presidency. This is not because the intelligence community is traitorous, or left wing, or (as Donald Trump Jr. sneeringly put it) wine-spritzer-drinking elites. It is because the IC had early access to a wide array of terrifying intelligence linking Trump and his orbit to Russia. People who spend their lives protecting their country from foreign threats saw in Trump a candidate who had at some level been compromised by one of them. Trump and his allies have viewed the causality the other way around. Because the IC distrusts Trump, its investigation of Trump’s connections to Russia is therefore illegitimate. Since his election, Trump has seized upon news of the investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia as evidence that the investigators cannot be trusted. If they were unbiased, he reasons, they wouldn’t have been investigating Trump in the first place. The newly released memo by Republican staff follows the tracks of this reasoning.
The real reason the Nunes memo matters - There IS a threat to American democracy. By Zack Beauchamp January 30, 2018 https://www.vox.com/world/2018/1/30/16950782/numes-memo-release ... The release of the memo seems designed to give Trump cover to act on these impulses. FBI agents almost certainly recognize this, and some will likely try to fight back by leaking damaging information on Trump and courting allies on Capitol Hill. What we’re heading for, after the memo’s actual release, is open war between Trump and the FBI. The winner will be determined in part by how many influential Republicans in the House and Senate are willing to defend the FBI’s independence in the coming days and weeks. The early signs on that front — like House Speaker Paul Ryan calling for a “cleanse" of the FBI on Tuesday morning — aren’t exactly encouraging. ...
Schiff accuses Nunes of altering memo before sending to White House By Jeremy Herb and Manu Raju, CNN - Feb 1, 2018 https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/31/politics/house-intelligence-transcript/index.html Washington (CNN)House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff is accusing chairman Devin Nunes of sending a different version of the memo alleging FBI surveillance abuses to the White House than what the committee approved. In a letter to Nunes, Schiff said that his staff discovered Wednesday evening that the memo sent to the White House was "materially different" than the version on which the committee voted. The White House is currently reviewing the four-page classified memo after the committee voted on Monday night to make it public. "It is now imperative that the Committee Majority immediately withdraw the document that it sent to the White House," Schiff wrote. "If the Majority remains intent on releasing its document to the public, despite repeated warnings from DOJ and the FBI, it must hold a new vote to release to the public its modified document." ...
The Nunes Memo Doesn’t Reveal an Abuse of Power. It Is On By ELIZABETH GOITEIN February 2, 2018 - TIME.com According to Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), the memo reveals official misconduct “worse than Watergate." King is right about the misconduct, but wrong about whose it is. ... Playing political games with classified information, sinister as it is, is nothing new. Executive branch officials routinely make selective disclosures in order to put the administration’s spin on news stories or gain support for its policies. Inconvenient facts remain classified. It’s a flagrant abuse of the classification system that happens every day; Congress is just getting in on the act. Nunes’ skewed disclosure, however, is designed to achieve something far more harmful than media spin. Soon after its release, the White House put out a statement that asserted the memorandum “raises serious concerns about the integrity of decisions made at the highest levels of the Department of Justice and the FBI." Trump sources have said the President is eager to discredit the FBI and Justice Department so he can re-make them to better suit his undemocratic notions of personal loyalty — dumping Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor heading the FBI’s Russia probe, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller’s investigation, in the process. ...

No, Nunes did not create the memo in secret. What is the memo? Just a report on what the committee found out about a few of the details of what the department has been doing. If the memo is wrong, then Nunes would look really stupid. What we, the public are watching is if our government is made up of three departments. Or four departments. Think about it this way. If you are running a business and you ask your employee a question about what has been going on in your business. And your employee refuses to tell you anything after a year of requests. Then you must investigate your employee and put your employee under oath to try and find out. Is it really your business? Are you really in charge of your business? Your employee understands that even though it is your business, you really don’t get to know anything about your business except what he decides to tell you. That is the way it is today. And it is not the way to operate any business or government.
Let me do a side bar for a moment. This is really simple if you follow history. There are basically two systems. The well-established caste system and the new democratic system. In the caste system you have the rulers at the top and the soldiers under them. In this case the soldiers are the lawyers fighting and defending the rulers. What it is looking like is that FBI is using the caste system and Nunes is fighting the FBI and trying to bring it back into the democratic system. Nunes need to destroy the separate FBI caste department and all the deep state rulers in this fourth department. That is the danger of secret courts and laws. It won’t happen, of course. But, this fourth department gave a taste of its power to democratic system and is showing how deep its roots go in controlling parts of the FBI, NSA, CIA, IRS, and justice department. That has been the problem with the socialist system, it always seems to get taken over by a caste system. Transparency is needed in all three government departments to keep the democratic system working with the full trust of the people. This fourth department showed its ugly head in the Lois Learner actions. What happened to the deep state when it abused the lower caste people? Nothing. This is a reason that many people voted for a person that was hated by the system in charge. Now, who is for Trump? Mostly people who would have a position in the lower levels of a caste system. Those who are against Trump, mostly people and business who have a possession in the caste system that they feel is higher up and those who feel that they will be rewarded and taken care of by a good caste system. Doesn’t it seem beyond belief that the Democratic Party does not have direction. Well surprise, it does, and it is moving and working hard in its direction. It has been taken over by a caste system that is fighting for its life right now.
When you say they speak for themselves, they are political, and I guess it would matter what side you are on in how you interpret the spin. The democrats are saying that Putin wanted to help Trump. Yea, I can see that, especially after what Hilary did to the Russian election. But, that would-be revenge, and if Putin was after revenge. Then why would he have put so many millions of Russian dollars in the Clinton pockets? Putin already had paid for Hilary’s support. So, if anything he would have been against Trump. And anyone reading the polls would have understood that Hilary was going to be the next president. The donations to Hilary’s fund shows that countries and big money all understood this. www.thompsontimeline.com/category/clinton-foundation/
No doubt we are watching a play that is going to take a couple of years or more to finish if it gets out to the public. We are at the point right now of having it put in the public depending on what facts can be proven. Regardless whether they are true or not.
A big question on the Republican’s mind is the actions of the media. Right now, there are two questions. Are their actions caused by money or by a broken education system?

A big question on the Republican’s mind is the actions of the media.

Another data dump to clutter up the site. You really think that nobody’s read the memos that came out a week ago. Or knows how to find it. You still don’t get what’s going on, do you? It doesn’t matter what Trump does. He can fart in public and not lose a republican vote. The democratic media and people are so much into themselves and their Hollywood thinking to realize that Trump is becoming one of America’s great presidents.

Data dump, data dump, don’t want no data - don’t want to see, don’t want to know what a farce it was.
Well, I like stashing data in easy to find places for later reference. And since you’ve have enough of the Nunes Memo perhaps it’s time for the
Grassley and Graham Criminal Referral of Christopher Steele - a similar example of GOP’s disinterest in America’s interest and ruthless obsession with deflecting attention, or some would call it obstruction of justice. :smirk:

Analysis Refutes Criminal Referral of Christopher Steele February 9, 2018 | Senator Feinstein https://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/0/9/09710d10-8885-4c05-9dee-d587fe0b7c0d/4E7F2E9D9626E9A02A76AC28640D0A01.steele-criminal-referral-analysis.pdf “The criminal referral of Christopher Steele has nothing to do with accountability," Feinstein said. “Clearly its goals included undermining the FBI and Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation, attacking Christopher Steele and deflecting attention from collusion and obstruction of justice investigations." “Not a single revelation in the Steele dossier has been refuted. Unfortunately, the claims in the criminal referral rely on classified information, so it’s difficult to fully repudiate them here. However, as much as possible using unclassified information, the following points lay out the flaws in the criminal referral." The following analysis rebuts a series of claims in the Grassley-Graham criminal referral: 1. The criminal referral is not based on any allegation that Steele lied or misrepresented facts about Carter Page or what is included in the Steele dossier. In fact, neither provide any evidence that any of the information in Steele’s dossier is wrong. Instead, the referral is limited to a single baseless allegation: that Steele lied about his contacts with the press. 2. The criminal referral omits key facts. The Department of Justice has provided documents regarding its interactions with Mr. Steele to the Judiciary Committee both before and after the criminal referral was made. Despite this, the Majority did not modify the criminal referral and pressed forward with its original claims, which do not take into account the additional information provided after the initial January 4 referral. ... 3. The criminal referral fails to make a case that Christopher Steele lied to the FBI. The referral states that “it appears that either Mr. Steele lied to the FBI or the British court, or that the classified documents reviewed by the Committee contain materially false statements."2 These allegations are made regarding Mr. Steele’s interactions with the press and whether he lied about those interactions to the FBI. ... 4. Christopher Steele is a respected and reliable expert on Russia. He served more than 20 years as an intelligence officer with the British intelligence service MI6, and worked in Moscow under diplomatic cover from 1990 to 1993.8 Mr. Steele has a history of providing useful information that has assisted law enforcement in criminal investigations. ... 5. Mr. Steele came forward voluntarily out of concern for U.S. national security. In early July 2016, Mr. Steele shared with the FBI what he viewed as alarming information about Russian interference in the 2016 election and a potentially compromised candidate. 13
Specifically, Mr. Simpson testified under oath to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence that Mr. Steele said, “I'm a former intelligence officer, and we're your closest ally. You know, I have obligations, professional obligations. If there's a national security emergency or possible national security issue, I should report it." ... “And I [Simpson] said: ‘So you're telling me that you think this is serious enough that it needs to be reported to law enforcement, and that you're confident enough in your sources, it's your professional judgment and your professional obligation, that you should report this to the FBI?’ And he [Steele] said, ‘Yes.’"14
6. The criminal referral contains no new information. All the information in the criminal referral was already available to the FBI and the Department of Justice.  In fact, the referral relies on publicly available information and information that was provided to Congress from DOJ and the FBI. 7. The facts about Carter Page are not disputed. As has been widely reported, the FBI was aware of Page’s extensive connections to Russia several years before he joined the Trump campaign. In fact, the FBI determined in 2013 that Russian intelligence operatives had been attempting to recruit him and warned Mr. Page about this.15 That same year, Mr. Page reportedly described himself as an “informal advisor to the staff of the Kremlin."16 Page continued to cultivate Russian investments and business17 – something that the FBI believed could be used by Russia to cultivate him as a source.18 ... ... None of these facts are disputed in the Grassley-Graham criminal referral.
CONCLUSION In June 2016, Mr. Steele began uncovering information indicating that Russia was interfering in the U.S. presidential election, and that the Trump campaign might be assisting Russia in its efforts.26 Under any circumstances, the right thing to do would be to go to law enforcement and turn over this information. And that is exactly what Mr. Steele did. Steele’s reporting was deemed reliable by the FBI. The FISA court granted three renewals of the FISA warrant on Carter Page after learning of Mr. Steele’s contacts with the press, a fact that did not cause the FBI to question the reliability of his underlying reporting. The President’s decision to declassify and release the Nunes memo has confirmed that the Russia investigation started because of another Trump campaign foreign policy advisor – George Papadopoulos – who was told in April that Russia had “dirt" on Clinton in the form of thousands of emails.27 Unlike Mr. Steele, Mr. Papadopoulos did not affirmatively share what he had learned with the FBI. This Committee should dedicate its resources and attention to getting to the bottom of exactly what Russia did during the 2016 election and who was involved – not attacking voluntary sources and the nation’s leading law enforcement agencies. ###

Please, yes please keep the democratic party backing people like Steele and keep giving creditability to the Clinton dossier, or as you call it the “Steele dossier". Would you please keep this up until the 2020 elections?

That's why you're the one rarely providing sources or even rarer substantive supporting info. You think by labeling it 'clinton memo' you can invalidate it. It's the Steele Memo, Christopher Steele that is,
Steele was recruited by MI6 directly following his graduation from Cambridge, working in London at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) from 1987 to 1989.[3] From 1990 to 1992, Steele worked under diplomatic cover as an MI6 agent in Moscow, serving at the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Moscow.[7][9] Steele was an “internal traveller", visiting newly-accessible cities such as Samara and Kazan.[4] Steele's identity as an MI6 officer was one of 115 names Her Majesty's Government attempted to suppress through a DSMA-Notice in 1999.[10][11] He returned to London in 1993, working again at the FCO until his posting to Paris in 1998, where he served under diplomatic cover until 2002.[9][12][13][14] In 2003, Steele was sent to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan as part of an MI6 team, briefing Special Forces on "kill or capture" missions for Taliban targets, and also spent time teaching new MI6 recruits.[9] By 2006, Steele was heading the Russia Desk at MI6.[4][7][15] Steele's expertise on Russia remained valued, and he served as a senior officer under John Scarlett, Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), from 2004 to 2009.[15] Steele was selected as case officer for Alexander Litvinenko and participated in the investigation of the Litvinenko poisoning in 2006.[9] It was Steele who quickly realised that Litvinenko's death "was a Russian state 'hit'".[15] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Steele

5 Takeaways From the Release of the Democratic Memo By CHARLIE SAVAGE | FEB. 24, 2018 https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/24/us/politics/takeaways-democratic-memo.html The F.B.I. used only a small part of the information provided by Mr. Steele. The Democratic memo says the application made “narrow use" of information from Mr. Steele’s sources. It describes multiple other categories of information, including yearslong suspicions that Mr. Page was being recruited by Russian spies, and revealed that the F.B.I. had interviewed Mr. Page about his ties to Russian intelligence officials in March 2016. ... The surveillance court knew that Mr. Steele’s clients had a political motive. The Republican memo complained that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court was not told that the Clinton campaign and the D.N.C. had financed Mr. Steele’s research, suggesting that the judges were misled about the credibility of his information. Democrats have called that claim misleading because the judges were told of a political motive, just without specific names. The Democratic memo provides a verbatim excerpt from the application, ... The Yahoo News article was not used to corroborate Mr. Steele. The wiretap application included a Yahoo News article from September 2016 that discussed the investigation into Mr. Page’s Russian ties. The Republican memo portrayed the application as having improperly used that article as corroboration of Mr. Steele’s claims, even though it later emerged — in a spring 2017 court filing — that Mr. Steele had been a source for it. The Democratic memo calls that a false claim by the Republicans. Instead, it says, the Justice Department referred to the Yahoo News article — as well as another one the Republican memo failed to mention — “not to provide separate corroboration for Steele’s reporting, but instead to inform the court of Page’s public denial of his suspected meetings in Moscow." Republican-appointed judges approved the surveillance of Mr. Page. The Republican memo portrayed the wiretapping of Mr. Page as a partisan conspiracy. Notably, the Democratic memo reveals that all four judges on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court who approved the initial surveillance — which began in October 2016 — as well as three 90-day renewals were appointed by Republican presidents. The wiretap of Mr. Page generated useful intelligence. When the Justice Department repeatedly sought the court’s permission to renew the surveillance of Mr. Page, the Democratic memo said, it cited new information it was gathering through the wiretap. ...
