Recently a rare 1792 penny turned up for sale at an auction and sold for two million dollars to a private collector. Nothing Earth shattering for non collectors ( I have a small, and I mean small collection so it caught my eye) but when looking at the motto on the obverse I found this: Liberty Protector of Science and Industry. Yes, not “In God We Trust” or In Jesus we believe", I made that one up of course, But a SECULAR motto, an original early Republican motto on a coin! To those who want to adopt the “original” values of our republic I say, hell yes! Destroy the 1950’s dies and return to the “good old days” when the Enlightenment values were revered. How about that; Liberty protecting Science and industry, not God.
Damn, I was so anxious to post this I screwed it up again. It should read: Liberty, Parent of Science and Industry! Anyway, you guys know what I mean.

It wouldn’t fit. And it would never pass. Best to have no motto at all.
How about, "Root of All Evil"?
Lois
My bad, the motto should read even more properly Parent of Science and Liberty. Makes me like it even more!

Respectfully, get it right, Jack. It says Parent of Science and Industry.
It seems ironic to me that today, of the siblings, Republicans and Democrats, one seems to be the champion of Industry and the other, the champion of Science. And they can't see eye to eye on much of anything. Probably, due in great part, to our confusion regarding getting "trusting in God" mixed up with governance.

Oops, I responded before I read your self-correction.
Those would be appropriate if the motto were the motto for money. I thought the motto was for our nation. If the motto is for money, it should be something like "In Currency We Trust".
If the motto is for our nation, we could do worse than "Parent of Science and Industry"... Oh, yeah, we are doing worse.

Ha! No problem Tim. See how the mind fools us by rearranging or filling in the blanks? I gotta remind myself not to rush the posts. Actually the main reason for posting the motto now is to point out the irony in what conservative politicians tout is supposedly bedrock philosophy. Also how ironic that science takes a back seat to religion when we need it now now more than ever, e.g. AGW denial that Obama focused on last night.

Nope. In a capitalist society like ours it reads "In God we trust, all others must pay cash"! Gotta get the big G in there somewhere, it legitimizes the rip off. Makes the one percenters look respectable in the public eye.

Hey so how about that State of the Union Speech last night.
Hey so how about that State of the Union Speech last night.
I give Obama kudos for trying and I basically agreed with everything he proposed, including giving students a leg up in education. The cost of a degree is absolutely skyrocketing and those who hang in there with GSLs have a huge debt to pay afterwards. It would be beneficial to the middle class to have even more trained citizens applying for jobs. Now, if he can get it past the stonewalling congress... . He's unfortunately got a rough ride ahead. They've already bypassed him to invite Netanyahu to speak at a joint session. One can only imagine what his topic will be.

It is nice that he is no longer bound by considering the effect of anything he does on getting elected again.
The funny moment in the Address, was when Obama stated that he has no more personal political campaigns, the Republicans started clapping and cheering, and the President humorously bitch-slapped them back down, by virtually saying "Yeah, you celebrate that, because when I run, I consistently beat your ass in elections."

Best quote of the speech. And true.
