I’m reading this book that addresses the questions I hear a lot, like why do people vote against their own interest, why is a flat-earther likely to also be an anti-vaxxer. I’m putting my notes in substack so they can be easily referenced. In this post, I talk about what is meant by “facts don’t change minds”.
Very interesting.
May i share this on the net?
Please do. The idea is for it to be useful to address common questions I see on threads of all kinds. At this point, I have no intention to charge for a subscription. I’m not sure how subscriptions work yet.
This book will probably be about 7 or 8 more posts, then I have another ready, and hopefully be able to keep it going.
Will there be an entry on how information is controlled and disseminated i.e. the propaganda model ? Disinformation?
Not on how propaganda is created, of that’s what you mean. And the control and dissemination part is centered around social media. It’s the dynamics of that, not the intentions of the sources of disinformation
Why
They are connected as one feeds the other. The charlie kirk murder is the case study unfolding now with the misinformation/ disinformation dished out to the public by established media and govt authorities that has generated opposing social media commentary
I didn’t write the book.
Social media wasn’t created by politicians. They wrote their algorithms to increase traffic to their sites to sell advertising and it turned out people arguing increased the views. Creators of propaganda try to do the same thing, “flood the zone”, distract people. Social media was just the latest medium.
Matthew is studying the users, us, the ones who can recognize what we’re doing maybe change our behaviors. Studying the people who are collecting our data and using it to manipulate us is being done, but it’s a different science, and there’s a lot less we can do about it.
Chapter 5 - rebuild trust in institutions.
Cant be done without addressing the propaganda model.
Not sure what your ideas are of “addressing the model”. I would need to hear your solutions, steps, actual ideas.
It’s easy to find articles like this one if you are looking for ideas
Solutions
Myth busting. Counter the misinformation
Reduce foreign influence. Meaning counter intelligence
Shut down accounts that spread it
Teach media literacy, starting early
And that’s just one article
Thats number 5 filter in the propaganda model .
Do you mean “anti-communisn”? Because that’s not what I mean
Fear. The communist threat , the muslim threat, the russian threat the chinese threat. You can learn here.
You know there are real threats, right? There are foreign actors cranking out misinformation. They advertise the tech jobs in the military during football games
What misinformation from outsiders? Put up or shut up
According to the testimonies of the investigative journalists and former employees of the offices, the main topics for posts included:[27][31][38][49]
Criticism of Alexei Navalny, his sponsors, and Russian opposition in general;[37]
Criticism of Ukraine’s and the United States’ foreign policies, and of the top politicians of these states;
Praise for Vladimir Putin and the policy of the Russian Federation;
Praise for and defense of Bashar al-Assad.[64]
The IRA has also leveraged trolls to erode trust in American political and media institutions and showcase certain politicians as incompetent.[3] Journalists have written that themes of trolling were consistent with those of other Russian propaganda outlets in topics and timing. Technical points used by trolls were taken mainly from content disseminated by RT (formerly Russia Today).[37][49]
A 2015 BBC News investigation identified the Olgino factory as the most likely producer of a September 2015 “Saiga 410K review”[65] video where an actor posing as a U.S. soldier shoots at a book that turns out to be a Quran, which sparked outrage. BBC News found among other irregularities that the soldier’s uniform is not used by the U.S. military and is easily purchased in Russia, and that the actor filmed was most likely a bartender from Saint Petersburg related to a troll factory employee.[66][67]
The citizen-journalism site Bellingcat identified the team from Olgino as the real authors of a video attributed to the Azov Battalion in which masked soldiers threaten the Netherlands for organizing the referendum on the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement.[68]
[quote="lausten, post:15,
What are you doing? I asked for actual misinformation. Take the first one. What is the disinformation being disseminated to the American public on Navalny?
You have all the proof you need to answer your question. Additional details of the information didn’t change that it is not “fear of communism”. Try to stay on the topic.
What is and where is 27, 31 , 38, 49? Is it reasonable to ask this?
No. It’s footnotes in Wikipedia, look em up
Whats the wiki page? Is that asking too much??
