Before forty years comes about and the oil is drained dry, the human race maybe extinct due to climate change, unable to switch to solar, thermal, hydro, wind, etc. If we don’t switch now, there won’t be any switching, believe it or not.
The tragic truth is that the world is so dependent (addicted) to oil that we are going to need the rest of that oil to allow us to switch without crashing the entire world’s economy and must even use it to manufacture renewable energy mechanics.
There will probably even be an interim period of bio-fuels, which are expensive to manufacture but can be used by combustion engines so that combustion-driven industries do not become immediately obsolete.
That maybe true, but the human race nor any other species, unless it’s the roaches who can survive a nuclear weapon, will survive that long. Maybe crashing the world’s economy and starting over with a different monetary system is the answer.

I do not follow this logic. The oil economy will crash without oil, so how does oil stop that crash? For that to work, there has to be a plan to reduce use. We aren’t doing that at anywhere near the pace needed.

We need the “remaining” oil to change the world’s oil-based infrastructure to non-oil (coal) energy producing infrastructure. This is going to take years .
A perfect analogy is “addiction”.
