Feminist Biology?

Maybe this is a new form of neo - Lysenkoism…the University of Wisconsin is now giving post doctorate degrees in “Feminist Biology.” Isn’t the credibility of higher
education slipping enough without this?
Then again, it will probably attract more young Americans to pursue “science.” :-S

Do you understand why this topic, “feminine biology” exists? Did you read the article or just the headline, and come to your conclusion? If you really care about science or know much about it, you would be able to see why exploring female biology as separate from human biology is so vital. The vast majority of medical knowledge for the human species is based solely on data from only male subjects. This is so because medical science has assumed for a long time the women’s and men’s bodies respond the same way to medicines and diseases. A huge mistake. The hormonal differences alone make the responses of their bodies very different. But medical science has ignored this fact since the beginning of medical science. That is now known to have been extraordinarily naive. It’s a long neglected branch of medical science.
Why do you dismiss it?

Huh? The article clearly states the purpose of this "feminist biology" is to counter rich, white, male scientists - The first post-doctoral fellow, Caroline VanSickle, also responded to Campus Reform’s inquiries about the program, saying via email: “We aren’t doing science well if we ignore the ideas and research of people who aren’t male, white, straight, or rich. […] Feminist science seeks to improve our understanding of the world by including people with different viewpoints. A more inclusive science means an opportunity to make new discoveries." Huh? The article clearly states the purpose of this "feminist biology" is to counter rich, white, male scientists - You just misquoted the headline. The headline actually says, "University offers post-doc in ‘feminist biology’ to counter ‘male, white, straight’ research". It does not mention male scientists. You probably read it that way because of your bias. Not very scientific of you, is it? You really should lookup "human female biology studies". The article has kind of politicized the topic by adding feminist rhetoric about "white, male, rich" bla bla bla, and you are probably reacting to that rather than noticing that there is a real scientific reason to research human female biology. If you choose not to explore much about something before you make your judgement, you can only make uninformed opinions that miss the point and make you look silly.

Handydan, this isn't about studies on female anatomy.

Either you didn’t really read the article or your reading comprehension is lacking. You still have not done a stitch of research have you?

Could you point out the sections of the articles which I'm failing to read?

Why not call it female biology, which is what it is, instead of injecting a contentious political term like “feminist biology”?
Lois

Lois is absolutely correct. While the research is quite valid along the lines of feminine biology, either the scientist who published the article, or more likely the dumb headline writers used the word feminist, possibly because they thought it would be more in vogue.

I don’t think Lois is right at all. According to the articles they want female biologists because men are supposedly bias when interpreting the findings. So I guess their solution is to balance it out with feminists. At least that’s how I understood it. Kinda like teaching creationism in biology classes to offer a different perspective. : )

No, they implied that the biology is feminist, not that the biologists are (or should be) feminists. Incidentally, even a man can be a feminist. Lois

Yeah, and some of us men are even humanists - respecting everyone, male or female.

Handydan, this isn't about studies on female anatomy. Mid atlantic, you are correct. This is not about feminine biology but about a "female feminist view point" to science. The quote of "University offers post-doc in ‘feminist biology’ to counter ‘male, white, straight’ research", is somewhat misleading and should have been more correctly stated as ""University offers post-doc in ‘feminist biology’ to counter the sexual stereotyping limitations found in the research of the ‘male, white, straight’ researcher". A big difference in perspective than what Handydan was stating. My objection would be that this too is restrictive and exclusive (which is why I find fault with it) of all but the female feminist point of view. There are a variety of people who don't fit the "straight, white, male" profile who are not feminist females and including their pov would be a more productive and a more complete compilation for a biological degree. Here is another article from Popular Science that is more explanatory.

I am surprised to find that we are all technically right. They are studying female biology “and” seeking a feminist approach to the science because the research that has been done was not only done with only male subjects, but that the approach to interpretation of results is also, now considered biased by its male researchers. For instance it used to be believed that the sperm penetrates the egg during fertilization. Now it is know that was a wrong characterization of the process. The old view interestingly enough mimics the male dominant social view of male female interaction that is now seen as typically biased to characterize men in the active role. The reality is that the process is in fact interactive, not dominated by the sperm. The sperm is actually far too weak a swimmer to penetrate anything.
