Bewitched and real life

Something recently brought to mind a scene from the original “Bewitched” sitcom. I saw it as reruns on daytime TV. There was a regular bit where Samantha would talk to the milkman. I can’t even find a picture of him. In the scene I remember, someone is suspected of having some wondering thoughts about other women, probably Darrin, but I’m not sure. So, she’s having this personal conversation with the guy, but he’s not getting it.

He listens. And then says, “Oh, I know. People are strange. Take your neighbor. I was delivering large curd cottage cheese to him for years. Then one day, he up and switches to small curd.” Even the recorded laugh track was pretty tame. Samantha just looked at him, shook her head, and went back to worrying.

As a kid, I almost wasn’t sure what the joke was. But I get it now. I tried to avoid hanging around with people like the milkman and definitely not being one. But it’s darn near impossible. The most engaged, intelligent, caring people I know will act like the clueless milkman.

I’ve been waiting almost sixty years for the milkman to deliver my milk. I haven’t ever seen those glass bottles delivered to my doorstep. What’s a gal gotta do to the milkman to come to her house?
