Becoming a CFI: tactics, expenses, and advice

There comes a time in every commercial pilots life when he or she realizes that becoming a CFI really might be the best option for a good job that will quickly amass hours. Most CFIs I know genuinely enjoy their jobs and their students and feel the process was worth it.

However, as I never really gave the idea much thought before, I’m not really sure what to do. I’m reading the PTS right now and I am looking at taking the FOI and CFI written exams.

I’d love to hear from everyone else’s experience with this rating. How many hours of flight time did it take? How much money did it cost? It is worth it go to through an accelerated program? How long did the checkride last?

I know that these things are different for each person, but it would be very helpful if I could get a general idea of what I’m getting myself into.

Thank you.

I have to wonder if you understand that “CFI” here means Center For Inquiry, not Certified Flight Instructor. I don’t think there are any pilots here. If there are, it wouldn’t be many.

I think you’re in the wrong forum. You may want to change your search from CFI to spelling out Certified Flight Instructor.
