Women their own worst enemy?

CuthbertJ, this post is your fault :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I’d have never seen it if I wasn’t chasing down and reading various articles on the “Banality of Evil”
(Troubling new revelations about Arendt and Heidegger.)
Those dang side bars I try so hard, but only semi-successfully, to ignore.
sorry, the devil makes me do it: What ten athletes can tell you about loving their bodies.

It occurred to me yesterday that the premise of this thread is sexist. Cuthbert is railing about women athletes dressing provocatively while ignoring men athletes who do the same. Maybe he has never watched swimming or diving competitions or seen any of the nude calendars featuring world-famous athletes.
Frankly, I think he’s being rather prudish. A few years ago some Austin, TX, musicians posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. I know a few of them and while I enjoyed the photos I did not lose respect for the people who posed nude. Get over it, Cuthbert. Many of us can enjoy seeing women dressed in scanty clothes and maintain respect for them. As I stated earlier, the problem isn’t the women and how they dress, the problem is you. Stop blaming women for your faults.

Humans are their own worst enemies. Sex is not a factor.

This thread is so full of nerd lulz.
I like some of you sometimes, but…you’re all just so nerdy. I know, I know…I came here, you didn’t invite me.

Agreed. This is a conversation that was beginning to be resolved tin the 20's in the U.S. After women were arrested on the beaches for wearing "provocative" swimsuits. After that hemlines rose above the knee by the mid twenties and the rest as they say is history. Clothing styles change with cultural norms. Judging what is acceptable today by the standards of the past is dogmatic and, as I said before, objectifying women. Of course one could grow a beard and join an Amish sect or a religious cult if you have a yen to jump back a couple of Centuries. Cap't Jack

Cap’t post #44 was well said, but
#31 was wonderfully said, so I’m plugging it in again.

Oh my God! Women competing in skimpy outfits! Uncle Peter, my smelling salts! What the hell are you prattling about Man? Your post is perfect example of the objectification of females. Get your head out of your Victorian butt for heaven's sakes! It's the 21st Century and ankles may now be seen. Sexual nature is base? Primal? Primitive? You just ripped a page out of The Ladies Book of Etiquette and politeness (published in 1860). No comparison to art? Damn those pornographic Athenians and their statues, not to mention that horn dog Michelangelo from the Renaissance. And I'll just bet Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" really makes you puke! The word prude comes to mind here. So, what context? There's uniforms for volleyball, beach bikinis, running, soccer you name it. Each is different and designed for each sport. If you object then avert your eyes in order to prevent carnal thoughts. Once again, your analogy of MLK is totally misplaced. You're aiming your invective at what you deem as skimpy female attire and then liking it to lampooning a Civil Rights leader. A non sequitur sir! Your analogy has absolutely nothing to do with the attire of female athletes, or male ones for that matter. And it's ok now to respect an athlete no matter how their dressed. Cap't Jack

What is so difficult about the notion of "context"? Swimmers wearing swim suits is a totally different context, geesh. Show me links to male runners dressed skimpy, presenting themselves as sex objects first, athletes second? Show me the links. And I'm talking (again context) in actual sporting events, not on a calendar that has a different goal. And btw, I love seeing scantily clad women too, and I have the utmost respect for women who are strippers who've chosen that line of work. Over and over you totally miss the point. Say the word context to yourself, google it, learn it's meaning. Good god Darron you're making me start to wonder. Let's get to the bottom of this. Tell us WHY do you like seeing scantily clad women? (And be honest. If you start on with a discussion of beauty, the female form, etc. you're lying through your teeth.)

(And be honest. If you start on with a discussion of beauty, the female form, etc. you're lying through your teeth.)I think the argument is that is it your perception/description of their attire, not that the runner thought: 'Hey, I'm going to wear the least amount of clothing I can during the competition.'. However, after poking around a little, it doesn't appear to be just your perception. Seems that the athletes didn't exactly choose their attire. From 2012: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/at-london-olympics-womens-athletes-wardrobes-are-source-of-debate/2012/07/26/gJQAPcrQCX_story.html From 2008: http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/China/story?id=5589206 Opinion blog from 2012: http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/susan-milligan/2012/07/30/female-olympic-athletes-still-not-taken-seriously Take care, Derek

My point exactly. This isn’t just my personal opinion. Now it IS news to me that the various sports governing bodies determine what will be worn. That in itself sounds pretty dumb, but maybe there are reasons for it. Regardless, women should protest. And I did noticed one woman said her bikini gives her a wider range of motion. Really? Then why don’t soccer players wear bikinis? Why not men athletes (non-swimming)? I think she’s just fooling herself. In any event, thanks for showing those links. This IS a serious topic and hopefully women will stand up for themselves and not allow these governing bodies to force them into what to wear. Even the notion of wearing a skirt, which was mentioned in one of the articles, is stupid, similar to what I’ve been saying. I’m hoping these women athletes was to be perceived as athletes first, women second, and sexy women somewhere way down the list.

If you deny this you're being dishonest. And there's nothing wrong here.
Hmm, except it looks like you're trying to bait people from the get go?
So tell me, why have women athletes' clothing become smaller and smaller?
Don't know, and don't care. Neither should you. It doesn't matter a whit. I think the question should be: Why in the world are you wasting bandwidth on such trivial concerns?

Just now looked at this thread.
Didn’t the original Olympic athletes go naked?
