The United Nations General Assembly held a vote on a resolution denouncing the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity”.
The countries of the political West refused to formally condemn the mass enslavement and trafficking of Africans.
The vast majority of UN member states | which are in the Global South | supported the resolution | with 123 votes in favor.
All of Europe (including Ukraine) abstained. There were 52 abstentions in total.
Slavery has been condemned previously as a crime against humanity.
On May 21, 2001, the National Assembly of France passed the Taubira law, recognizing slavery as a crime against humanity. And, earlier in 1848, when France abolished slavery in its possessions, ownership of slavery was the only crime which could make you loose your nationality.
Such a condamnation was not the stake, and if my opinion had been asked i would have said no.
Why ? For two reasons:
- Crimes against humanity are crimes against humanity; it is unbecoming to opposite one to the others ones, and to create a hierarchy where none is needed;
- Saying that slavery is the gravest crime against humanity is a way to diminish the importance of the genocide against the jews.
And, incidentally, it is a way to condemn West, forgetting that the Arab slave traffic lasted much longer, with same or worst effects.
