Mike
My last reply to you, on another thread, kept getting gobbled up by the AI on this site. I hope this one goes through.
I like to develop my opinions around objective facts (crazy, I know). First, I want to look at what’s really going on with violent crime here in the US.
The rate of violent crime (murder, rape, assault, etc) has actually decreased drastically since it’s high in the 1990s. This is not in dispute. Every organization that studies violent crime has seen the trend (see a chart of FBI violent crime rate stats here) (see a chart of FBI violent crime rate stats here) - Album on Imgur.
One specific type of crime has increased, though, and that is mass gun shootings;
(here is a chart that shows how mass shooting deaths & injuries have increased since the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired) (here is a chart that shows how mass shooting deaths & injuries have increased since the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired) - Album on Imgur.
The idea that morality has decreased, and people are becoming more and more violent over time, is simply false. And this isn’t the “liberal mass media” lying. In fact, the same trend has been seen worldwide. That’s because lots of things that were accepted, or taken for granted, yesterday are not acceptable today.
As to your comment on how the liberals took morality out of the schools, can I assume you mean corporal punishment and school prayer? (Those are the factors usually brought up.)
First, you will be happy to know that corporal punishment is alive and well in many US schools. Forty-eight of the 50 states allow paddling in private schools, and it’s legal in public schools in 19 states. and it's legal in public schools in 19 states. - Album on Imgur
Interestingly, ACT scores are lower, and violence & teen pregnancy higher, in the districts where it is common place. So at best, paddling doesn’t seem to help, and at worst it exacerbates problems.
Re school prayer, the false narratives around this are legion. The Supreme Court voted in 1962 that teachers and other public school staff could no longer lead prayers, Christian or otherwise. However, students can still pray, carry Bibles (or Qur’ans or whatever), form prayer clubs, wear religious jewelry, etc., as long as they don’t disrupt other students.
The vote was in the context of multiple complaints by not just atheists but Unitarian, Jewish and Catholic families who objected to their kids being forced to read and pray out of the King James Bible.
Christians who think this is horrible should spend 30 seconds to turn it around in their minds and imagine how they’d feel if they had to have their kids in a public school and their child came home and informed them their Arabic teacher made them recite the Shahada.
You say that children should be taught morality through fairy tales. Do you have kids? I hope not. Fairy tales, Bible stories, etc., have helped to reinforce messages, but the best way to teach kids right from wrong is to realize they understand more than we think, teach them to express themselves appropriately, and allow them to suffer natural consequences (like losing friends if they’re rude, or having toys ruined if they are left outside).
Since the eldest Baby Boomers, born in the 1940s and 1950s, was the generation that rebelled and turned out, maybe the old fashioned ideas of childrearing didn’t work so well after all.
Well, let’s see if THIS one goes through. I will await your rebuttal, informing me that I am an ignorant liberal because your neighbor is a juvenile delinquent.
