The Orville

Anyone catch last night’s episode? It had the crew going to a planet that was “very similar to 21st century earth”. When they get there, everyone has a badge that they must wear and people vote you up or down as you interact with them. There is no apparent government, everything is decided this way, however there are police, and they’ll arrest you if you get too many down votes.
The discussion is then, is this a “pure democracy”, or are they mistaking opinion for deliberation? It’s a comedy show, so it doesn’t get too deep, but I actually like that they are presenting these ideas in easily accessible terms.

Pure democracy is not realistic but I too enjoyed the show. I kind of though of Star Trek written by Saturday Night Live writers.
