What is wrong with these men? Why consort with someone like Epstein? My opinion of these guys has taken a nosedive.

I have no answer to your questions. No one here has ever defended Dawkins or Krauss or any others who had similar accusations. I don’t usually track that kind of sensationalist journalism, except when it’s people in positions of power.
Epstein was undeniably a con man, a pervert, and a pedophile!
But he was also a businessman, an intermediary, and an intelligent, charismatic man, readily offering favors and providing funds, cultured, and passionate about science.
Many people are mentioned in his files, including Macron, whom he wished to meet, a meeting that never took place because he approached several people to arrange it.
Furthermore, many people are mentioned for having met him occasionally, for a variety of reasons, without ever having participated in illegal activities or even being aware of his criminal record.
Finally, some are mentioned for having been part of his social circle. Two questions arise:

Did they participate in illegal activities, sexually or otherwise, such as financially?

What did they know? What did they know beyond the conviction? It’s possible that some knew no more than we did, but that’s highly doubtful for others.

And this raises the question of tolerance for sexual offenses in our society, especially since, thanks to the protections he received, the sentence was minimal. Therefore, the facts may have been underestimated. Occasionally soliciting a minor prostitute isn’t seen as serious as systematically raping young girls.
The final interesting point is his far-right political stance.
I have no idea where to classify Dawkins.

I fully agree, it was shameful pedophilia.
But soliciting minor can be soliciting once a 17 years old woman, appearing as being 19 or 20. It is not because they knew the condamnation that they knew the facts.
The punishment was lenient . Don’t judge the fact from what is known now, but from what was known at the time.
And, honnestly, could any one not knowing the facts imaging that the state of Florida would have protected such a child abuser.
I don’t defend Dawkins, i try to be fair.
That is the definition of a cover up. It took years of a slow process through the DOJ to get those documents public. Women who have come forward have been found dead. Witnesses have not been interviewed or offered protection.
Rather than wasting time on who knew what when, we should be pressuring the people who currently are holding the cards to cough them up or be removed from their positions.

It is wild how far and wide Epstein’s contacts reached, but it’s not that surprising prominent atheists and scientists are involved.
The whole freethinking community – or whatever you want to call it – is mostly made up of extremely nerdy guys. They are always socially and sexually inept, and always bad with women.
Where did you get this idea? Epstein was never really political, but he donated far more to Democrat politicians than GOP.
The only thing about him that could sort of be called far-right was his Jewish chauvinism.

I can believe Hillary might not have known much about what was going on with Epstein. However, there can be no doubt she met him at least once.

I’ve been in hot tubs with women that I never met before and never saw before. Clinton is a liar and misogynist and who knows what else, but rich and powerful people are not going to leave evidence laying around. A cultural shift is needed where women are believed, where sex work is done in a way that women maintain control over their bodies and their lives, where massive databases of evidence are not hidden and under the control of the very people who are in them.
This shift is somewhat happening, but I’m surprised how slowly it is progressing. The “Me Too” moment was a shift, but we slid back. There was a time when the President (I’m thinking of JFK) had affairs and who knows what and the press and anyone at those high levels knew about it, but they all kept it from the public. Now, they all accuse each other, and some people voluntarily resign, but the investigations are theatre, a farce.
Honestly, as long as the man or the woman does not do anything illegal, a politician having an affair is a matter for him/her, the man or the woman with whom he has an affair, and for the person with whom he lives daily, if there is one !!!
And i don’t give a damn, except that the way he/she conducts his/her affairs can reveal his/her personality.
Usually, I don’t use he/she, but here I want to insist on the fact that a woman is entitled to have an affair.
