I know it comes up every year, but it’s always a fun listen.
Now pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgement
For I’ve no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
yes, I know Jesus was never a real person, or at least that we can’t find a real person via all of the information we have. This is about what Jesus represents.
“From a temple to a robbers den.”
…
Well we guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should seize us
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel JesusNow pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgement
For I’ve no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In a life of hardship and of earthly toil
There’s a need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus
Been ages since I’ve heard that. Splendid writer that Californian is.
Since the title of this thread is favorite Xmas song, here’s one that I thought was a classic the first time I heard it. My affection for it hasn’t diminished.
I like the way Lennon wrote a Christmas song that sounds like a Christmas song, and asks, “but what have we done”.
Browne interrupts the flow of the melody when he gets to the words that he wants you to hear. Brilliant technique but, you know, you can’t dance to it.
Oh gosh, thinking about your words and Lennon, reminded of Jackson’s line:
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus
Liked it, but just had to come back and say wow, what a beautiful work!
