Favorite Songs About Religion

I like a lot of the Jesus Christ Superstar songs.
I Don’t Know How To Love Him (Yvonne Elliman, Concept Album)

Heaven On Their Minds (Jerome Pradon, 2000 film)

Herod’s Song (Rik Mayall, 2000 film)

Superstar (Carl Anderson, 1973 film)

I saw the original London stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar. ‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’ is just wonderful. ‘Herod’s Song’ is so vaudeville / music hall, I could imagine it being sung by Jimmy Durante. The fanfare at the beginning of ‘Superstar’ must be one of the most recognisable few seconds of music of the 20th century.

Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life
End over end, neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them, righteous up rights
Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life
Make me, oh, make me, Lord, more than I am
Make me a piece in Your master game plan
Free from the earthly tem pestion below
I’ve got the will, Lord, if You got the toe
Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life
End over end, neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them, righteous up rights
Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life
Bring on the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed, dear, loved ones of mine
Stick 'em up front in the offensive line

Here’s a classic

Just found out U2’s “40” is about Psalm 40

Nothing Fails Like Prayer (Dan Barker)
The farmers pray for precipitation, and they say “In God we trust.”
Then along comes a drought and drives their crops out and turns their prayers into dust.
The next time they need some assistance, they should take the advice of Mark Twain
Who said it’s better to check the weather report before you pray for rain.
Nothing fails like prayer.
Nothing fails like prayer.
Use your mind and you will find that nothing fails like prayer.
It’s the final week of the school year, but you haven’t studied your best
So you stay up and cram for the final exam and you pray for God’s help on the test.
So you answer the questions with assurance that the Lord would help you sail through.
When the results are returned, what have you learned? God is no smarter than you.
Nothing fails like prayer.
Nothing fails like prayer.
Use your mind and you will find that nothing fails like prayer.
You can hear it sung here:

My all time favorite:

Baba Brinkman’s Rap Guide To Religion is entertaining.

My all time favorite: Tom Lehrer - The Vatican Rag]
I'd forgotten that one. He is quoted as saying that Henry Kissinger winning the Nobel Prize made political satire obsolete, Donald Trump getting the Republican nomination does that in spades. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Lehrer Not much personal there. But he's apparently still alive at 88. He stopped performing in the 60s.
