The hypernym of atheism (metaphysical worldview) is a very important topic and must become a main category. We have less rights (uncategorized and miscategorized) as atheists when society and many atheists use incorrect hypernyms of atheism.

Atheism isn’t a religion because it doesn’t include supernatural teleology. Atheists are humans and a percentage of humans can have non-standard views, but this doesn’t alter the vast majority of atheists. In surveys the correct selection of hypernyms is of major importance. The hypernym “philosophical view” is too wide because philosophy doesn’t only include metaphysical worldviews. A very wide hypernym fails to specifically describe.

Yes Atheism is not a religion. But is it a materialism ? One can reject the idea of gods, and believe in spirits and ghosts.
And yes the correct selection of the right hypernym is important. The first step would be to list what you include in it. And i am not sure about that.
Mathematically according to set theory you’re correct. In many cases some cohort subcategories/hyponyms don’t belong to the used hypernym. The religiously indifferent don’t truly belong under the hypernym metaphysical worldviews (many statisticians erroneously use the term “religion” as the hypernym of all metaphysical worldviews). In sociology the closest possible term is chosen, and some hyponyms and hypernyms don’t exactly match but are close enough or close enough to what we want to describe, including lack of something. If we apply strict set theory rules to social cohorts we’ll have to reject some incompatible cohorts.
Atheism is weaker than antisupernaturalism. Antisupernaturalism is its hypernym.
Materialism is even superior being an affirmativism. Metaphysical naturalism is a more modern equivalent. Physicalism suffers from category errors.
An intellectually stronger term is harder to become dominant because it requires way more effort. Its adherents would have to study more rigorously in an organized manner; and there’s no guarantee they will continue for long to be coherent as a group and maintain affirmative rationalism. Also if some thinkers become very specific they’ll start to fragment and differentiate. That’s why atheism is socially (certainly not intellectually; it’s not bad as a secondary property) stronger as a cohort terminology than wider and affirmative terms.
Still the false hypernymization of religion is the worst option.
