About the Introduce Yourself category

This is a hard concept to grasp. I can’t be an expert on everything. I don’t have the time or resources to look up everything I read and check its accuracy. This is different from faith. Note that the textbook on algebra told you it starts with axioms. The Bible should have that in its introduction too.

The difference is, I can use the algebra to predict real events in the world and calculate properties of drawings and numbers, then demonstrate they’re accurate using real objects. If all the people who worked to put rockets on the moon tell me they used algebra, what are the odds that they are all just taking it on faith and algebra doesn’t really work?

I did my experiment twice yesterday. The first time succeeded and the second time did not. On reflection I realized that I had changed a couple of things in the second experiment. I will purify more soap and perform the experiment again. I still have some soap from the first time that I purified it and I will run the experiment again tomorrow. I realize that no one can be an expert on everything. I do not claim to be one either. What I do know is that when I was in college in the 1970’s, all biology and premed majors were required to take organic chemistry. They would have read in the textbook that the decarboxylation of fatty acids was impractical. I didn’t check this out in the literature at that time and it seems that no one else did either. When I was on the evangelist Ray Comfort’s Atheist Central facebook page, I gave the scientific literature references and asked someone to look at the scientific literature as I was convinced that they could see the flaw in the literature. They refused to look at scientific literature. Thus I thought, "You can lead an atheist to evidence, but you can’t make him look at it.’

The Bible does have this. I encourage you to read Genesis 1-3. What I want to focus on though is Exodus 15:26. I encorage you to pick up a copy of “None of these Diseases” by S.I. McMillen, M.D.
I encourage you to pick up an edition that was revised and expanded by his grandson, David Stern, M.D. If you do not have a source to find this I recommend ebay. In the Bible there are many practices for good health that have only recently been discovered by modern medicine. To get you started I will refer to the treatment of leprosy. Dr. McMillen’s historical source is, George Rosen, History of Public Health (New York: MD Publications, 1958), pp.62-65. In a brief quote from the book, “Leadership was taken by the church, as the physicians had nothing to offer.” Later in the same quote, “Following the precepts laid down in Leviticus (the third book in the Bible) the church undertook the task of combatting leprosy… it accomplished the first great feat… in methodical eradication of disease,” I encourage you to look up this source, It seems likely that you will find it in a medical library, There are many other good health practices in the Bible. As I see it there are four possible sources for this information. Either we got it from space aliens or Moses got it from Egyptian medical practices or Moses was a brilliant medical man over 3500 years ahead of his time or he got his knowledge from God as he claimed. I look forward to your response.

You may be off by a few thousand years.

Leprosy

Elimination of leprosy as a public health problem globally (defined as prevalence of less than 1 per 10 000 population) was achieved in 2000 (as per World Health Assembly resolution 44.9) and in most countries by 2010. The reduction in the number of new cases has been gradual, both globally and in the WHO regions. Jan 27, 2023
Leprosy

But it is true that there was active research of diseases (and possessions) in monastries .
Monks on the whole are a well educated class.

This was possible because other than nobility, monasteries acquired large libraries of books that were otherwise forbidden to the ignorant public.
Religious orders have always enjoyed privileged status, as they do today still.

If these are your choices, there isn’t much room for discussion. Could you at least consider the possibility that modern science has something to say?

The quotes that I refer to refer to leprosy in the 13th and 14th century. I encourage you to read a copy of the medical history book that I mentioned to read the quotes in context. The church did indeed have access to medical knowledge that the general public did not have, They had the Bible and the wisdom in it.
One more example of medical knowledge from the Bible is the practice of handwashing to prevent the spread of disease between patients. This is referred to in Numbers 19 in the Bible. I encourage you to pick up a copy of “None of these Diseases” by S.I. McMillen, M.D to read how the method of handwashing in the Bible imitates that done by modern medicine. I also encourage you to read about Ignaz Semmelweis, a Viennese physician of the 1840’s. He introduced handwashing to prevent the spread of infection and disease and many lives were saved. Semmelweis was rewarded for his efforts. He was kicked out of two hospitals. The infection rate shot up, but the other doctors didn’t care because they had gotten rid of the “old handwasher.” I encourage you to check out this book and the history of Semmelweis unless you are afraid to look at opinions other than your own.

The medical knowledge in the book that I have referenced in the book is in the part of the Bible that was written by Moses. My question I am asking is where do you think that Moses got this knowledge from? This was at least 3500 years ago before modern medicine. The possibilities that I mentioned are the only ones that I can see. If you can suggest another possibility of how Moses got this information, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Why should this be an item of contention? We all know that medicine gradually evolved from the exorcism of demon possession and the practice of using blood letting and leeches to modern medicine .

Exactly when and how this happened is really not important. It had nothing to do with religion per se.

If God was responsible for medicine, it was also responsible for disease to begin with, no?

Look up the history of Semmelweis and see if what I am saying is accurate. The plain truth is that the method of handwashing to prevent the spread of infection is in the Bible. Read the book “None of these Diseases”, the sources in the book, and other references that you have available. I am willing to read and consider any sources that you suggest. By looking at both sides of the issue, we can find the truth.
By the way, I do not recall the use of leeches or exorcism in the first five books of the Bible. If you can find them, please educate me. Thank you.

What are you trying to prove? That the bible is a reliable scientific instrument?

Listen, if you are going to hold up the bible as a reliable source of science, then I can come up with plenty that is not only incorrect but actually harmful.

Bloodletting, it had been practiced by monks until this actual beneficial medicinal procedure was prohibited by the church.

A Brief History of Bloodletting

As researchers announce that bloodletting might have some benefits after all, find out more about this ancient treatment’s long history.

Several thousand years ago, whether you were an Egyptian with migraines or a feverish Greek, chances are your doctor would try one first-line treatment before all others: bloodletting. He or she would open a vein with a lancet or sharpened piece of wood, causing blood to flow out and into a waiting receptacle. If you got lucky, leeches might perform the gruesome task in place of crude instruments.

In medieval Europe, bloodletting became the standard treatment for various conditions, from plague and smallpox to epilepsy and gout. Practitioners typically nicked veins or arteries in the forearm or neck, sometimes using a special tool featuring a fixed blade and known as a fleam.

In 1163 a church edict prohibited monks and priests, who often stood in as doctors, from performing bloodletting, stating that the church “abhorred” the procedure. Partly in response to this injunction, barbers began offering a range of services that included bloodletting, cupping, tooth extractions, lancing and even amputations—along with, of course, trims and shaves. The modern striped barber’s pole harkens back to the bloodstained towels that would hang outside the offices of these “barber-surgeons.”

By the late 1800s new treatments and technologies had largely edged out bloodletting, and studies by prominent physicians began to discredit the practice. Today it remains a conventional therapy for a very small number of conditions. The use of leeches, meanwhile, has experienced a renaissance in recent decades, particularly in the field of microsurgery.

The bible is not a reliable source of science. If you want to use it as a moral guide, fine, but don’t conflate mythology with actual history or the authoritative source of healthcare and medicine.

Do you want to know what the bible says about medicine?
OK, here you go…

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness 2 Timothy 3:16

What The Bible says about …

Medical Science

First of all, if you get sick, it’s your own damned fault. (God made you sick for ignoring his voice, doing wrong in his sight, and/or ignoring his commandments.)

If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee. Exodus 15:26

If you do something evil and God punishes you with sickness, rely on faith-based medicine. Prayer and faith alone will cure you.
These signs shall follow them that believe … they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:17-18

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. James 5:14-15

For as it says in the Psalms,
The Lord … healeth all thy diseases. Psalm 103:2-3

And as Jesus said to the woman who touched his garment,
Thy faith hath made thee whole. Matthew 9:22, Mark 5:34, Luke 8:48

If faith alone doesn’t cure you, try touching your religious leader’s handkerchief or shadow or something.
So that from his [Paul’s] body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Acts 19:12

They brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them … and they were healed every one. Acts 5:15-16

Or use the lump-of-figs cure. (It was one of Isaiah’s favorites.)
And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered. 2 Kings 20:7

If you have too little faith for any these remedies, purchase some bible-based medical insurance. Several plans are available.
The Paul plan. (A holy man falls on and embraces your dead body.)
Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him … And they brought the young man alive. Acts 20:10-12

The Elijah plan (A holy man stretches himself on your dead body three times.)
He [Elijah] stretched himself upon the child three times. … and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 1 Kings 17:21-22

The Elisha I plan (Similar to the other two, but a bit more involved. A holy man lies on your dead body while he puts his mouth on your mouth, his eyes on your eyes, his hands on your hands, and stretches himself on you. This will cause your flesh to warm. Then, after he walks to and fro and stretches himself on you one more time, you’ll rise from the dead and sneeze seven times.)

When Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead… And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 2 Kings 4:34-35

The Elisha II plan (Ask that your dead body touch the bones of a dead prophet.)
As they were burying a man … when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. 2 Kings 13:21

But whatever you do, don’t go to a doctor. God is insulted if you trust science more than faith.

And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. 2 Chronicles 16:12

And why is that? Why did the church not teach this knowledge to as many people as possible? In the neighborhood that I lived in, in Minneapolis, the big hospital noticed kids coming in with lead poisoning, so they created a widespread campaign to educate people about lead paint in their houses. Is there anything like that in Christian history? Or, is it stories about how if you believe, you will be healed?

What kind of God tells someone wandering in the desert about something, then doesn’t tell anyone else for 3,000 years? Something a simple as handwashing?

I don’t think he got it at all. I think you are taking a few verses passed down over millennia and noticing a tiny similarity to modern science. The knowledge we now have can be traced down to the earliest experiments a few hundred years ago. We know where that came from and how it was gained.

Okay, here’s an easy one. Compare these two:

Keep it clean: The surprising 130-year history of handwashing | Coronavirus | The Guardian

Numbers 9 NIV - The Passover - The LORD spoke to Moses - Bible Gateway

The first one does not credit the Bible. The second one says “unclean” and talks about being kicked out of the tribe for not doing the rituals.

What knowledge? Farming? Farming was invented by ants and termites 3 billion years ago.

If you will read the book, “None of these Diseases” by S.I. McMillen, M.D. which was revised and edited by his grandson, David Stern, M.D. and look at the source references from the medical literature, you will find that this information was disseminated by the people of God, I am not asking you to read much Bible. I am asking you to read the medical literature. You can find it through interlibrary loan or by going to a medical library.
I personally did not discover these techniques from the Bible. I read about them from the book mentioned above which was written by two physicians. It seems likely that physicians are able to recognize medical knowledge regardless of the source.
I note that as you said, the source that you mentioned does not mention that handwashing came from the Biblical source. I would ask you to compare the method of handwashing in the 130 year history of handwashing to modern methods of handwashing. If you compare the modern method with the method listed in the book I mentioned, you will find that they are almost identical.
I have read your Bible page on medical issues. Many of the references are taken out of context for the medical issues that I read. I encourage you to read them in context.

I will note that when COVID started, handwashing was encouraged to stop the spread of COVID. This indicates to me that handwashing was not being done even though it was recognized for many years by medical science as a means for preventing the spread of disease. In other words it was not being taught to the public.
In response to your statement that “God is insulted if you go to a doctor.” Jesus said, Those who are well don’t need a physician, but those who are sick. Also, Luke, who wrote the third Gospel was a physician and no one put him down for it.
I have many things more that I could say here, but I won’t. It has occurred to me that there may be some here who are afraid to look at medical evidence written by Christian physicians because of possible persecution by others on this site. I encourage you to pick up a copy of “None of These Diseases” by S.I. McMillen, M.D. which was revised by his grandson David Stern, M.D. You can pick up a copy through interlibrary loan. For those who wish to discuss this privately, I will leave my email address: georgekunzman@mediacombb.net I wish you all well. As I have looked at your evidence, I ask you to look at the evidence that I have presented in context. I will look at this blog one last time in about one week. Have a good day.

I linked the chapter and verse you referenced

Let me correct you on a conceptual mistake. Unlike many religious sites, no one on this site persecutes anybody based on religion, or race, or creed.

We will debate the issues and philosophies based on their merits, but all posters will be treated with respect unless they break the rules.

I have solid evidence that very few atheists will look at evidence. When I was on my first atheist website, many of the atheists claimed to be biologists and chemists but they refused to look at a one page article of scientific literature which would suggest things that they do not want to believe. I have also read that some people on this website do not believe that God gave Moses the modern method of handwashing. To those people I say, “Do as I do.” When I have a scientific or medical question, I contact a university professor or the faculty of a local medical school and ask a question. I encourage you to take the following information and do likewise. Read the first few pages of “None of these Diseases” by S.I. McMillen, M.D. that talk about handwashing and read the pages in the Bible about it. Then take this information and ask a faculty member of a local medical school about it. I have talked to many scientists and medical professionals and they have been very willing to answer my questions without cost. I then encourage you to check out the other medical remedies in the Bible with medical professionals. I note that you have listed many Bible verses about medical and moral issues. One thing I note is that you base your quotes on one verse. If you would take the verse in context or compare it with other passages of the Bible in many cases you would come to an entirely different conclusion. All I am asking you is to consider the evidence and consult professionals to confirm or deny what is in the book I refer to and the Bible. This seems to be a reasonable request. Am I wrong?

That is wrong. Atheist are the most knowledgeable class of people in biblical teachings . That’s why they are atheist.

Survey: Atheists, Agnostics Know More About Religion Than Religious

September 28, 20102:50 PM ET
By: JJ Sutherland

The Pew Forum on Religious Religion and Public Life released a survey on religious knowledge today. Atheists and Agnostics scored higher on it than anyone else, closely followed by Jews and Mormons.

** That’s overall, but when you get into specific religions it does show a startling lack of basic knowledge by practitioners.**

From the report:

More than four-in-ten Catholics in the United States (45%) do not know that their church teaches that the bread and wine used in Communion do not merely symbolize but actually become the body and blood of Christ. About half of Protestants (53%) cannot correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation, which made their religion a separate branch of Christianity. Roughly four-in-ten Jews (43%) do not recognize that Maimonides, one of the most venerated rabbis in history, was Jewish.

The study also showed that Americans have a fairly poor understanding of religions other than their own. Only about half of the people surveyed know that Martin Luther inspired the Reformation, the Dalai Lama is Buddhist, and Joseph Smith was a Mormon.

Why are Atheists and Agnostics better informed? The Los Angeles Times quotes one of the researchers who has a theory:

American atheists and agnostics tend to be people who grew up in a religious tradition and consciously gave it up, often after a great deal of reflection and study, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum.

“These are people who thought a lot about religion,” he said. “They’re not indifferent. They care about it.”

Also interesting is that Black Protestants and Latino Catholics scored at the bottom of the survey.

This is where you are wrong. Modern medicine evolved from very crude attempts at healing . We already discussed that the monks were in a favorite position to study and experiment in medicine.
It is said that monks invented “whiskey”, using perfume making equipment.

The origins of whiskey can be traced back to the Medieval monks of both Ireland and Scotland , but now, those two countries make their own distinctive styles of their native spirit.

What is the evidence of the first surgery?

Scientists find evidence of oldest known surgery, from 31000 years ago

What you have is called anecdotal evidence. It’s evidence, but it’s not solid.

Same for contacting a university or the many scientists you have talked to. All anecdotes.
