What to do when you read stuff you don't understand or have an answer to?

You’re lucky then. I can’t let things go, I keep finding something new to obsess over and things like that. When one answer is given another one pops up, or a new bit that I obsess over from an old view like this thread:

It’s hard to move on when the things being said deal with emotion and our perception of reality.

No, I’m not. I took the advice of experts. I faced my demons. I did the hard work. What I didn’t do is tell everyone they were wrong and nothing would work for me.

Well the demons feel too strong for me to fight, ok? I’ve been at this for 10 years, on different meds, techniques, therapists, all of it. But it just doesn’t feel like anything works, and it doesn’t help that my concerns are around science and not irrational stuff. I know I mentioned before but I can’t help feeling like the more I get into science or AI the more people just relate folks to machines:

I’ve been reading through a lot of your posts and I’m trying to think of how to apply this knowledge to an RL agent, specifically for a contest (MineRL) where you’re not allowed to use any hardcoded knowledge besides the architecture, training algorithm, and broadly applicable heuristics like curiosity. Unfortunately, I keep running into the hardcoded via evolution parts of your model. It doesn’t seem like the steering subsystem can be replaced with just the raw reward signal, and it also doesn’t seem like it can be easily learned via regular RL. Do you have any ideas on how to replace those kind of evolved systems in that kind of environment?

like…how does none of what I post make you lose sleep at night?

That question has been answered 100 times. The world could end tomorrow. I live like life is short and I make plans for the future. I believe I can make a difference. That’s it

But it hasn’t really been answered, most people I ask aren’t really bothered by the things I read, and yet I am. When I ask how they just say they’re not, but when I read stuff like this I wonder how they’re not: “Non-Player Character” – Eliezer S. Yudkowsky

Is it better to live and love where death is king than never have lived at all? Would Rilanya, if she was real, feel that her life was worth living? No conversational AI, the singular quiet intelligence that controls every mind throughout the game, has ever protested its fate. But are the personalities of the NPCs real, trapped within the game AI as we ourselves are embedded helplessly within the laws of physics? The mindsmiths who try for real AI say they’re damn sure it isn’t so. Maybe they know. But I don’t.

Neither of us are “most people”. If you want to fit in, not talk about neuroscience or reality, go ahead, be normal, be boring. Lots of people check out and lead meaningless lives. But that’s not you. I give you credit for grappling with difficult issues, but not for obsessing and getting upset because you haven’t solved the mysteries of the universe.

The problem is my brain can’t stop, it has to read the next thing, and the next thing even when I don’t want to and what I read makes it hard to sleep at night or treat people the same way again. The worst is I have no one to talk to about it…

This is a summary of the last story: https://share.gemini.google/uvT0pd9jZb0d

but that aside, the things I’ve read have broken my view of reality. From values and morality not being objective to one’s that cast doubt on free will and agency. I have no model left of the world, no way to really function because it’s all broken. I wish I could go back to boring, to not think about all this stuff. At least then I’d sleep at night, at least then my brain wouldn’t be wracked with things I don’t have answers to.

I’m so…so exhausted of being triggered by everything in my life because everything I’ve read questions everything I know…

Or try this one: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/SqgRtCwueovvwxpDQ/valence-series-2-valence-and-normativity#2_2_The__misleading__intuition_that_valence_is_an_attribute_of_real_world_things

Saying that valence isn’t a property of real world things and how we add it to objects. Or how it’s learned from experience, seeing that makes me unsure how to interact with the world around me or what my feelings mean.

Try this one. Shel Silverstein mostly wrote kids rhymes. This one is for grown ups. To help you out, when seek the Tzu-Tzu flower no matter how many gurus tell you that the answer is within you.

It’s a nice poem, but I’ve been too challenged by too much to see things “normal” again. I don’t know how to piece it together, especially when it comes to the self or even if wants exist:

Your link is by a guy who is developing software. He is looking at the mind as an algorithm. That’s his job. It says nothing about what consciousness actually is or what the self is.

But that’s what he’s saying though, he’s saying the self doesn’t exist and he has a section on what consciousness is.

on a different note I read some article about homosexuality possibly being deviant according to some theory of sexuality

He’s repeating what others say. He doesn’t study biology or the brain.

People have been saying that for thousands of years. It doesn’t make them right.

I mean he does neuroscience.

as for the homosexuality bit, I saw something that referenced how homosexuality comes about through some deviance theory but I can’t remember the source

This is from his homepage, his words

I’m a Boston-area physicist working on Artificial General Intelligence safety research (a.k.a. “AI Alignment”), mostly via thinking about neuroscience and algorithms

I guess that tracks.

but there’s still the article I read talking about explaining homosexuality through some theory of sexual deviancy. But I can’t remember the source or what it really said, just that part.

It’s hard to believe that you don’t see that you are the problem. If someone said to you that they think they read something, but they don’t remember the details, you wouldn’t accept that as scientific fact. In this case, you are the person who says something is possibly true, but can’t remember why.

I know it doesn’t make sense but I think the source is on my pc and I’m on the iPhone and when I check my browser history there is nothing. I’m not even sure what the name of the theory is. But also in response to the other dude he made this one too about free will that still bugs me:

Yes, I know it can be hard to track down your browsing history. That’s not the point. Science includes have multiple sources verify the data and multiple experts review each other. So, if can’t start from scratch and find evidence for the thing you are checking, that means you came across an isolated opinion. Let it go.

I don’t have time right now, but 8.3 talks about motivation. What do you think of that?
