Understanding ourselves

If we can recognize who we are, we can speak to what we are.

I would love to hear you spell out “who we are”.

How would you describe “what we are”?

An invasive species. Where we go we kill (domesticate) the native population and alter (spoil) the environment

I do this pretty regularly, so I’ll make it short. I’ve done it when I talk about kids who did not benefit from good parenting or good schools. It’s in the morality posts I made recently. We have tendencies to cooperate and also to be selfish, to calmly work out our differences and to take quick violent action.

That’s a very similar question. The difference the meme relates is how we handle that mental circuitry. If we understand that we have the tendencies that pull us in different directions, and that we have the frontal lobe functioning to sort out those tendencies then we can realize the world of our desires. So the mental circuitry is the “what” and desires are the “who”, but of course all that exists in each individual.

The “who” and the “what” I mean is; who we are is a species that is capable of incredible things when we work together and listen to all the voices in the crowd and use the tools we’ve invented to overcome the “what we are” that for a long time didn’t know what we evolved from and didn’t know there was no saviour coming to help and that there is no purpose bestowed upon us from on high. In every moment, we need to recognize the “what” that we came from and exists within us, so we can become the “who” that we see in our vision, the aspiration to make the world better for life around us and generations to come.

Or another way of distinguishing the two, “what” is the immediate action or words or attitude you are getting from the other human being, “who” is the complete essence and potential of that being.

Do you feel any connection to this planet’s biosphere?
Or other creatures?

Could you describe that connection?

Yes. That would be an expansion on what I’ve been saying.

I did include them specifically.

I could. Not sure if I want to take the time.
