Finished Chernobyl the other night. Excellent show. Anyone who has access to HBO should watch it.
Watched three more episodes of TNG last night (that’s a lot of bike riding). More terrible acting, cheesy sets and absurd lapses in common sense (arrrgh!, will they ever use the transporter to even 1/100th of it’s potential?), and I love it.
I forgot Dr. Polaski. She doesn’t have a lovable or even likable personality, but I appreciate her character. No nonsense, stands up to Picard, and cares about helping at all costs.
Sadly I’ve not been watching TNG that consistently. Our Netflix was down one day so I watched some episodes of Northern Exposure (we own the box set of all episodes. Best purchase I’ve ever made.) and now I watch it about half the time.
NE is the most brilliantly written show I’ve ever seen. The plots and dialogue and characters are just… perfect.
TNG makes me hopeful for our collective future while NE makes me happy about my personal ‘now’.
Got six more episodes of TNG under my belt since the weekend. Season 3 Episode 17 was the last one I watched.
So many great moral and ethical messages in that show. My daughter has to write a manifesto on something (her choice) for school, so I think I’ll get her to watch episode 16 of season 3 with me. It will definitely give her an interesting perspective on gender and human rights. She’s already very open-minded regarding gender and equal rights for all, but this episode will show her it’s been a topic with a broad set of public attitudes since long before her time (kids sometimes think their generation is the first to have an idea).
Took a break from TNG and watched a couple other Netflix series while biking to nowhere.
Started watching “The Trials if Gabriel Gonzalez”. It’s a true story of unimaginable abuse of a child. Don’t watch this if stories of abuse haunt you after you turn off the TV, because this one will destroy you. There are only five episodes and I’ve watched three. For viewing this heavy, one episode a week is my maximum.
Last night I finally finished the seven episode, true story series, “The Pharmacist” It’s about a father who lost his son to illegal drugs. He’s a bit of a bulldog when it comes to investigating things, so he ultimately finds his sons killer without police help. Then he notices the oxycontin flowing out of his store, almost exclusively due to one doctor, and the rest of the episodes are his obsession with exposing her. A real feel bad/feel good show. Although it’s depressing and makes you mad, it doesn’t make you blood-boiling enraged like the first series I talked about.
I also started watching “The Sinner”. It’s a twisty tale of unexpected murderers who killed for reasons you don’t expect. Not bad. I have two episodes left. Not much to say about it, but I’m still watching it, so it’s not that bad.
I’ve been on such a ‘based on a true story’ binge lately that shows that aren’t based on a true story feel very blah. Without the knowledge that there is some reality in the show, I find it hard to get invested.
I made a mistake. It’s not “The Trials if Gabriel Gonzalez”, It’s “The Trials if Gabriel Fernandez”.
I started “Messiah”. It takes some concentration. There is a lot of English, but also Hebrew, Syrian (not sure what language that is), and others, with subtitles of course. Plus all the accents. The Iranian Messiah appears to have some magic powers, but the CIA woman remains skeptical that he just has some good backing. He disappears from Israel and appears in Texas a day later, but they can track his flights. But, know did he know to go there? There was a tornado and the only thing spared was a tiny church. So people think he saved it. All that, and it’s only 3 episodes!
I always watch with subtitles, so accents and that sort of thing don’t matter.
Our friends cancelled Netflix because they said some show on it showed god as gay. Is Messiah the show?
Nope, that’s The First Temptation of Christ, a short comedy film. It’s cheaply made, reminds me of some older British sitcoms, but it’s worth it. Brazillian/Spanish with subtitles.
They both sound interesting enough to check out. This evening maybe, depending on what the family has planned.
