Republicans - reality - manmade global warming

Republicans believe it's okay to deny observable facts - They believe it's their personal "Free Speech Right" to fabricate lies and malicious nonsense, then insist their cynical misdirections are reputable facts. Which they most certainly are not - as any good-faith full spectrum examination makes clear. They refuse to listen to any corrections and thoughtful explanations, they slander honest, accomplished and respected scientists with hysterical claims, sans all serious evidence. Since arguing the facts of the matter is a loser for them, they derail discussions with character assassination attempts on all who dare defend climate scientists against the outlandish paranoid machinations of fiction reporters - all this rather than rationally listening to what scientists have to teach. Of course, taking our changing global environment seriously does demand changing the way we think and do things. It demands growing up and recognizing we have a huge population on a warming planet with shrinking resources and we no longer have the luxury of behaving as though Earth was still a limitless cornucopia. Since I'm still not getting the time I need to write, I want to share an article from last year where I try to describe our failure of vision and curiosity when it comes to addressing humanity's most fateful "geophysical experiment." ... http://citizenschallenge.blogspot.com/2016/12/republicans-reality-manmade-global.html (Where those paragraph's are filled with links to supporting information)
I wonder if I'll ever meet a Trump fan who can rationally explain themselves or the shit he says, while sticking to observable facts. V, consider it a gentleman's challenge. :smirk:

I see there haven’t been any takers - gentlemen or brave Repubs.

STATE OF THE CLIMATE

April, 20 2020
First quarter of 2020 is second warmest on record

https://www.carbonbrief.org/state-of-the-climate-first-quarter-of-2020-is-second-warmest-on-record

This year is shaping up to be one of the warmest years on record – if not the warmest. This is particularly noteworthy because 2020 is likely to see neutral El Niño/La Niña conditions that will play little-to-no role in boosting annual temperatures.

The first three months of 2020 were the second warmest on record, behind only the super-El Niño-fuelled 2016. The past 12 months were also nearly tied for the warmest 12-month period on record. Near-record sea surface temperatures have driven extensive coral bleaching during the southern hemisphere summer.

Global temperatures are currently running at or above the level projected by the generation of climate models featured in the 2013 Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) fifth assessment report (AR5).

Global sea level continues to rise in 2020. This is being driven by melting glaciers and ice sheets, as well as the thermal expansion of water as it warms. Arctic sea ice currently is on the low end of its historical range after seeing the joint-second lowest minimum Arctic sea ice extent on record in 2019, while Antarctic sea ice is closer to normal levels for this time of year. …

Forecasters predict a very active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season

https: //www _ sciencenews _org/article/weather-forecasters-predict-very-active-2020-atlantic-hurricane-season

By Carolyn Gramling - APRIL 16, 2020

Warmer ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic could fuel stronger storms …

… All of these groups cited very high sea-surface temperatures, or SST, in the tropical Atlantic Ocean as a key reason for the expected activity (SN: 9/28/18). Warm moist air evaporating from the ocean acts as fuel for hurricanes, pumping water into the atmosphere that then gets carried higher by converging winds until it rains out, releasing more heat and driving the cycle forward.

“Atlantic SST is forecasted to be one of the warmest since 1993,” researchers with the University of Arizona noted April 13. It was the first time the team released its forecast in April, rather than June. …

Greenland and Antarctica ice loss accelerating By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent, March 12 2020

https: //www _ bbc _ com/news/science-environment-51846468

Earth’s great ice sheets, Greenland and Antarctica, are now losing mass six times faster than they were in the 1990s thanks to warming conditions.

A comprehensive review of satellite data acquired at both poles is unequivocal in its assessment of accelerating trends, say scientists.

Between them, Greenland and Antarctica lost 6.4 trillion tonnes of ice in the period from 1992 to 2017.

This was sufficient to push up global sea-levels by 17.8mm.

“That’s not a good news story,” said Prof Andrew Shepherd from the University of Leeds in the UK.

“Today, the ice sheets contribute about a third of all sea-level rise, whereas in the 1990s, their contribution was actually pretty small at about 5%. This has important implications for the future, for coastal flooding and erosion,” he told BBC News.

The researcher co-leads a project called the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise, or Imbie.

California’s Mega Fires Have Arrived 30 Years Early Climate models that looked at temperature change could not foresee the effects of drought and fire suppression

By Anne C. Mulkern, E&E News on October 20, 2020

A major analysis by state researchers projected that the amount of area burned by wildfire could jump 77% by the end of the century. Another study by UCLA warned that by 2050 fire on average would scorch twice as much land in Southern California.

A doubling happened this year, instead of three decades from now.

It takes place as climate change-heightened disasters arrive sooner than anticipated around the world, researchers said. Arctic ice sheets are melting rapidly, and parts of Siberia hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit in July for the first time (Climatewire, July 16).

Along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, the intensity of hurricanes has been increasing due to warming waters and higher sea levels. Flooding in the Midwest last year devastated farms.

California, Irvine, saw earlier impacts. Alex Hall, a climate scientist at UCLA, said the research outlined a gradual increase in fire severity leading up to the midcentury.

“The massive increase in wildfire size and intensity that we have seen over the past five years, maybe, especially over the past two or three years, is not something that was predicted by climate scientists,” Hall said of California fires.

When his paper was published in 2015, he said, “we thought we were being really apocalyptic” by predicting that the amount of area burned would double by 2050.

“I was worried about making a prediction that was too scary,” Hall said. “Turns out I should have been scarier.”

It’s no surprise to those who’ve actually paid attention.

In response to CC,

As you clearly and convincingly state the irrefutable assertion that rapid global warming is a present and growing threat for mankind it’s no surprise that no conservative republican chooses to argue in opposition. It’s because they don’t have the facts and more than that they don’t want to honestly consider the facts, facts that are demonstrably evident and all around us.

When reality is too unpalatable a shell of ignorance is a useful tool for avoiding it. Many simply dismiss it because it’s future generations that will bear the consequences and they’ll be conveniently gone when the worst of this coming disaster visit our children and grandchildren. Climate deniers simply don’t care about how we leave this world because ignorance and selfishness allow no consideration for others. They just don’t care.

It’s strange if you mention the name Obama or Hillary they talk on and on and on venting their bitter acrimony but if you mention science or something like climate research they clam up and pout like a spoiled 5 year old.
