Neil DeGrasse Tyson: We Are Witnessing The 'Unraveling Of An Informed Democracy' | MSNBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIfc5Oo0hkc Sep 20, 2017 Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how climate change deniers in government are 'unraveling' our informed democracy by making policees that are not based on scientific fact.
It got me to thinking about all the shell shocked people who simply can't believe weather could be so destructive and that of course got me back to the same old problem. Here goes: 3:30 ++ What it's about? Why did we as a society fail this grand existential challenge created by our own success and numbers? We learned 40, 50 years ago beyond reasonable doubt that unless we radically changed our mind set - namely turning down our obsession for ever more stuff. (Also, make less babies and developing sustainable economies rather than predatory blood sucker economies of boom and bust and consumption, pollution and destruction.) A realization for the limits of growth and appreciation for 'enlightened self interest'. Of learning to appreciate our Earth and "nature" and our biosphere with respect. Of realizing the importance of nurturing our planet, of consuming less, of learning to harness Earth constructively. Nurture landscapes and wild places and animals, while a more reasoned approach to living and town/cities, etc. needed to be developed. Ratcheting down our fossil fuels burning as fast as possible. All this was necessary if we wanted the human reign to last for more than simply a few more generations. We had none of it. Reaganomics won the hearts and minds, the obsession with maximizing profits, minimizing responsibilities and expenditures, became the imperative of the day, of the decades. Earth and nature and biosphere became dirty words to the right wing. Instead they had wars to create and profits to make, and we said sure, whatever. No turning off that innate childish impulse, "too much is never is enough" - instead we embraced it with vengeance, ignoring all sober voices of moderation, becoming entranced with Hollywood generated mass fantasy and the literal unhinging from our down Earth’s realities. The geophysics of this grand manmade global warming experiment we’ve been on. The past decades have flown by, every decade the world has warmed, the deniers have gotten more ruthless and dishonest and hostile - and those that know better get more timid. I have kids and grandkids and it's nightmarish thinking what we've condemned them and their communities to while I get to watch the news full of people who are absolutely startled that a weather event could be so destructive and take away pretty near all they had.

The fantasy is that most people are rational, they aren’t. Most still believe in the equivalent of fairies and goblins and can be manipulated at will to accept total bullshit.
It’s what global warming denial has been based on from the start, look at Yohe here. He’s not trying to make sense, he’s telling fairy tales that too many people still believe.
Or Rush Limbaugh telling his listeners that a hurricane that had already killed 60 people and did $190 BILLION of damage was fake news created by the leftists. Then told them not to worry about the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic shortly before jumping in his private jet to flee for his life from the approaching monster storm he claimed was a figment of someone’s imagination.
As many as 50 Americans may have died as a result of Irma;

Many in the media are reporting that Hurricane Irma’s U.S. death toll—meaning those who died in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina—was 39. But the correct U.S. number may be as many as 50 or more. That higher figure includes those who died in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, whose residents are U.S. citizens.
Irma also caused billions of dollars in damage across the Caribbean and US. What's going on has nothing to do with reason or facts, it's about power and the ability to wield it. And the people who have wielded it best in the past have quite often been pathological liars, it's where religions and myths come from. sl...

Then we get to trump who is total fantasy, there really is nothing behind the bullshit with this guy, his entire existence is predicated on almost absolute deceit.

He’s telling the entire truth 5% of the time, mostly true 12% of the time, mostly false 33% of the time and total bullshit 15% of the time. That’s not an accident, he’s intentionally creating a perpetual fairy tale because the reality of who he actually is is so unappealing that he’d be rejected by anyone with any sense if it wasn’t concealed somehow.
Maybe the Russians will the release the golden shower video of trump someday, that would give at least some direct view of the reality behind the BS, but for those who have bought the fairy tale completely it’s unlikely that or anything would bring them back to reality.
Reality can be a very bitter pill to swallow for those who define themselves by how much damage they do the world around them not how much good. That is what these myths are for and why such an absolutely abusive and destructive personality like trump is now the leader of this growing age of unreason. It’s like a pedophile coming up with complex and totally false justifications for their actions.
That may apply directly in trump’s case, this is a freak that quite likely likes to rape little girls.

If you’ve been anywhere near Facebook or Twitter in the past several months, you’re probably aware that there is a case working its way through the courts that accuses Donald Trump of raping a 13-year-old girl in 1994.
As trump is demonstrably full of BS, I'm going to assume that he did in fact rape a 13 year old in 1994. The same applies to Putin, I think he got taped molesting little boys in the 1980s. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/jan/22/alexander-litvinenko-slain-ex-kgb-spy-accused-puti/
Alexander Litvinenko publicly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of being a pedophile just four months before he was poisoned in 2006, an inquiry into the ex-KGB spy’s death has found. When the future Russian president was a student, he was filmed abusing children in an apartment where another top politician had a threesome with prostitutes, Litvinenko claimed in an article on the Chechenpress website in July 2006, four months before he was murdered, The Daily Mail reported. Litvinenko made the accusation after the president was pictured a month earlier kissing the stomach of a 5-year-old boy during a walkabout in a public square near the Kremlin.
Politicians kissing babies is cliche, but a grown man tenderly kissing the stomach of a 5 year old is perverted. These myths that are being created are intended to mask the utter depravity of the world's "elite" who are in most cases the most screwed up people in the world. This isn't going to get better until we put back in their place the sociopaths who are now in control of much of humanity now. trump and putin being two prime examples.
President Trump has made 1,318 false or misleading claims over 263 days By Michelle Ye Hee Lee, Glenn Kessler and Meg Kelly October 10 at 3:00 AM https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2017/10/10/president-trump-has-made-1318-false-or-misleading-claims-over-263-days/

You hit the nail on the head, and the real problem for the Left. The right has realized people are by and large controlled by emotion, and so they play to that brilliantly. And part of that entails being ok with an Ends justify the Means approach. The Left otoh thinks reason and facts are the best approach. And they are loath to take an Ends justify the Means approach. So how do you proceed? This notion that the Dems just need to get a positive message out to more people just doesn't work. They need to find a way to appeal purely to emotions without jumping over to the Ends justify Means dark side.

Dems have to fight fire with fire or they'll keep on losing. Fact of life--Nice guys finish last--as they did in the 2016 election. Underhanded, conscienceless bullies win. Lois

Seems a decent place to park this one:

Not that this is going to have a good ending, but so it goes…
