Oh Oh Snow

WNY is shut down due to blizzard conditions. Unable to go out today. No driving allowed. Warnings not even to go put to shovel the drive way due to windchill of -20 to -30. Everything is closed including (damn!!)most of the Churches of the Corner Bar. Crazy dog wants to go out and play. Surprise the airport is closed. Flash flood warnings just issued for flash floods along sections of Niagara River due to an ice jam at near the power station intakes. Don’t remember that ever happening before.
Dumb local news media has people driving around to broadcast “visual” warnings not to go out.
Come on Ma Nature - where’s the global warming when we need it… >:(

Polar vortexes are like that.

It is incorporated into the SCIENCE of climate change, where it belongs. Global warming has always been a misnomer. It seriously confuses uninformed people. "The breaking off of a large chunk of the polar vortex and its visit to the northern U.S. is a random event resulting from a serendipitous arrangement of weather systems. In short, the clockwise flow around giant areas of high pressure over Alaska and west of Greenland have forced the atmosphere’s steering currents to shove the vortex into the northern U.S. It happened before humans dumped billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and will happen again. "This polar vortex excursion is a single weather event directly affecting about 2 percent of the world. "Climate change is measured by evaluating continental to global trends in weather over decades – not events happening over a few days in a little region. For this reason, a fleeting cold wave (or snowstorm) over part of a continent should never be used as evidence for or against climate change. "The record shows winter temperatures have risen markedly in recent decades across the northern hemisphere." http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/01/06/the-polar-vortex-in-no-way-disproves-climate-change/ It also has nothng to do with the ice breaker ship that was stuck in the ice in Antartica. However, none of the above will ever convince the Fox News watchers who rely solely on oversimplified explanations that global “warming” has anything to do with it. Colder temps and snow=global warming refuted, period.

Australia] There is a reason scientists use the term Global Warming. And our news media apparently are too stupid dishonest to explain the difference between weather and climate.

I'm sorry but I need to take issue with that. Thanks to increased Greenhouse Gas levels, our atmosphere is capturing more infrared rays as they leave the Earth's surface. Just like putting on extra insulation. Our planet's global climate system IS warming. What people need to realize is that we don't live in a post card - we live on a dynamic four dimensional planet, with all sorts of circulation patterns and interconnected feedbacks. Scientists don't understand it 100%, but scientists do know the climate's anatomy pretty well as the fantastic NASA video Earth From Space (HD) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38peWm76l-U makes clear. It's not the notion of Global Warming that sucks, it's the poor explaining of it to the public that sucks. Such as not making it clear that an incomplete Earth's surface temperature set does not represent the temperature of the entire system. And that it's the temperature of the entire system that really matters for how weather systems will play themselves out. Remember Hurricane Sandy a mere category one storm, it's a pretty good example of how internal heat can feed and push a weather system into an extreme destructive event? http://www.climatecentral.org/blogs/the-most-detailed-visualizations-of-hurricane-sandy-revealed-16563 well that and... even more important and destructive to the public's clear understanding, is all the malicious power-political interests that are deliberately and strategically lying to people, with the biggest PR megaphone money can buy. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PS. POLAR VORTEX CAUSES HUNDREDS OF INJURIES AS PEOPLE MAKING SNIDE REMARKS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE ARE PUNCHED IN FACE
ByAndy Borowitz

In an emergency room in St. Paul, Harland Dorrinson, forty-one, was waiting to be treated for bruising to the facial area after he made a crack about how the below-freezing temperatures meant that climate-change activists were full of shit. “I’d just finished saying it and boom, out of nowhere someone punched me in the face," he said. “This polar vortex is really dangerous."

While Most of U.S. Froze, Parts of Alaska Set Record Highs Published: December 10th, 2013 By Andrew Freedman http://www.climatecentral.org/news/while-most-of-u.s.-froze-parts-of-alaska-set-record-highs-16817
While the continental U.S. has been shivering from coast-to-coast with temperatures dropping as low as minus-40°F amid one of the most severe early December cold snaps in several years, one state bucked the trend in an historic way. The same contorted jet stream pattern that brought the brutal cold to the lower 48 states pushed a pulse of milder-than-average air into Alaska, where some spots recorded temperatures unheard of for December. Along Alaska's northern coastline, which lies above the Arctic Circle, the warmest December temperatures on record in at least 70 years occurred this past week. ...

I hope you all know the global warming remark is a joke.
What surprises me however is the much better way we are able to handle weather like this. With much better weather forecasting and much improved means of communication, no one was caught by surprise and to this point not one death from the storm has been reported in WNY. Much better than the blizzard of 77, where we were caught totally by surprise.

hmmm, they use "models" for that don't they? ;-)

I remember you saying that last year when WNY had a cold snap. I took it as an opportunity to educate lurkers or drive-by readers.

I remember that Winter well. We lived near Dayton then and when it hit the cops warned everybody to stay off the roads and they closed the interstate. There were fatalities because people took few precautions and didn't believe the authorities. That was also when the Ohio R. froze over for the first time since the Twenties. but on a warmer note, there's an excellent book by Brian Fagan called The Little Ice Age that traces it from the 14th Century thru to the Twentieth. The last chapter speaks to global warming if you want to skip to the end, which I don't recommend because the book details the impact of climate change on European and American History but I digress. His charts clearly show that global warming began accelerating at a steady pace for the last 150 years with the advent of coal fired factories and later diesel fuel, or we did it and we're still doing it and attempts to stop it are being thwarted at every turn, hence the gigantic billboards in WVa. touting Obama's "war on coal" by Senatorial candidate and conservative Rebublican Shelly Moore Capito. It's all about the radiative balance. We're adding large amounts of a molecule that is very good at absorbing EM radiation in the wavelength that the Earth's emits. The incoming mostly shorter wavelength EM from the sun mostly passes right through the atmosphere. some is reflected by the landsurface, ice for instance reflects about 90% of sunlight. This radiation heats the Earth's surface which then emits longer wavelength EM because the Earth is much cooler than the sun. The end result is there's more energy coming in than is going out and the entire system has to heat up to bring itself back into balance. So the overall global system is warming, but it's not doing so evenly, and most of the new energy is ending up in the oceans. It's equivalent to about 400,000 Hiroshima sized nuclear bombs a day, every day right now. This also works out to about 7,409,177,820,267,687 kitten sneezes a second. http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/12/22/3089711/global-warming-hiroshima-bombs/

I know. They are so easily confused. Like Johnson said said about Ford, they can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I've been trying for years to explain how we can have cold weather and global warming at the same time to some people who just won't get it. It's like someone saying, "How can I have a fever when my hands are cold?" Sometimes I think we'll have to just wait for them to self-select themselves out of the gene pool. If only it didn't take so long! Lois

Unfortunately Lois they make up a majority of the gene pool, but maybe a few will win a Darwin award! Here's yet another glaring example: a chemical spill near Charleston, WVa. Has shut down the water supply for nine counties and a few of the residents posted on Facebook that Obama was to blame. They heard that FEMA was responsible for the spill. Oh, and they also blamed Obama for the New Orleans fiasco. I might as well throw this in too while I'm at it; he's also the Antichrist, and a Muslim, and hates coal. Cap't Jack
