Many religious leaders, at least in the fundamentalism of my experience, tell their followers that atheists are evil and in league with the devil, so they start off with quite a bit of suspicion.
As for support for this president, it makes total sense. He’s right on the edge of being openly racist and enjoys support of an unheard of 87% in the party. I think that says something about the party.
