Exactly, that is the definition of natural selection and why I maintain that the ecology of the earth is not fine-tuned for life but that life is fine-tuned to the earth’s ecology. That is the process of evolution by natural selection for compatibility with the earth’s environment.
That is from evolutionary perspective, but not from a stochastic perspective. Natural selection selects for best adaption from a set of random small variations. Large chance genetic mutations as from inbreeding are almost always detrimental and not at the right time or the right place.
A chance mutation is not a result of conditions being favorable. It is often an unfortunate probability.
And the earth is quite capable of supporting life within the boundaries of what the ecosphere can support. But ultimately the earth has limited resources and cannot sustain exponential growth forever. It seems we have reached this limit and the earth is beginning to show signs of instability and chaotic behavior.
If we don’t, nature will choose for us.
Remember Prof. Bartlett’s chart?
The earth itself doesn’t give a hoot. It’s dealt with problems much larger than humans. We are just a “surface nuisance”.
I love discussing the effects of the “exponential function”, but I’d like to keep this thread focused on microtubules.
Do we have thread about the moral solutions to overpopulation?
