Senate Confirmation Hearings to Begin Without All Background Checks By JENNIFER STEINHAUER and ERIC LICHTBLAU - JAN. 7, 2017 http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/07/us/politics/senate-confirmation-hearings-background-checks.html?action=click&contentCollection=Politics&region=Footer&module=WhatsNext&version=WhatsNext&contentID=WhatsNext&moduleDetail=undefined&pgtype=Multimedia WASHINGTON — As Senate Republicans embark on a flurry of confirmation hearings this week, several of Donald J. Trump’s appointees have yet to complete the background checks and ethics clearances customarily required before the Senate begins to consider cabinet-level nominees. Republicans, who are expected to hold up to five hearings on Wednesday alone, say they simply want to ensure that the new president has a team in place as soon as possible. “I believe all the president-elect’s cabinet appointments will be confirmed," Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, said. But Democrats are calling for the process to be slowed and for the hearings to be spread out. That, they say, would allow more time to vet the nominees. “Our first overarching focus is getting tax returns and ethics forms," said Senator Amy Klobuchar, Democrat of Minnesota. In a letter to Senators Chuck Schumer of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, the leader of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter M. Shaub Jr., said on Friday that “the announced hearing schedule for several nominees who have not completed the ethics review process is of great concern to me."

Okay, so I’m not Sarah, but I’m sure she would approve of me passing along her petition.

I'm Sarah Rasmussen of Greenpeace, and I started a petition to the United States Senate, which says: I am deeply concerned by Donald Trump's nomination of Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson for secretary of state. As your constituent, I am urging you to stand on the side of the American people in opposing this nomination and voting to block Tillerson's confirmation. Sign Sarah's petition As if a cabinet of white nationalists, climate deniers, and Wall Street billionaires wasn't enough, Trump nominated Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson to serve as the next secretary of state. Yes, that Exxon. The same Exxon that knew about climate change as early as the 1970s and spent the next four decades spreading climate denial.1 The same Exxon that has spent millions to block climate action so it can drill for oil all over the world. The same Exxon that has routinely put its profits above people and the environment. Send a message to your senators today asking them to stand up to Exxon and block Tillerson's confirmation as secretary of state! http://act.moveon.org/go/7422?t=2&akid=175891.35627244.NkADUr As the CEO of Exxon, Tillerson has consistently put his business interests above the well-being of the American people—as his cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin, who awarded him one of Russia's highest honor, reflects. He has gone so far as to publicly criticize sanctions on Russia, undermining U.S. international leadership to protect his own business dealings with Putin.2 If he becomes secretary of state, Tillerson would have immense power to spread the fossil fuel industry's polluting agenda as official U.S. foreign policy. But it's not set in stone yet. This is urgent! The Senate can still block Tillerson's nomination—and it's up to YOU to make sure they do. Thanks! —Sarah Rasmussen, Greenpeace Sources: 1. Tips on Calling Your Member of Congress http://civilrights.org/action_center/resources/calling-congress.html When you dial 202-224-3121 you are directed to an operator at the Capitol switchboard. This switchboard can direct you to both senators as well as representatives. Once the operator answers, ask to be connected to whomever you are trying to reach. They will send you to your senator's or representative's office line, and a legislative assistant will answer the phone. It is important to let them know why you are calling and what issue you are calling about. You will sometimes be able to speak directly to your senator or representative, but more often you will speak to a staff person in the member's office. This person keeps track of how many people called and their positions on issues, and provides a summary to the member. Be assured that your call does count, even if you are not able to speak directly to your senator or representative. * You can also find the direct number to any member's office by consulting the Senate phone list or House phone list http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm http://clerk.house.gov/member_info/mcapdir.html How to be effective about contacting your senator: What Really Happens When You Call? http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/2/10/91524/-
