That is a reasonable response. It's sad that so many people are not willing to do that basic step or stepping away and looking it up. Maybe more important is that when two people are talking and one brings up something that they say is authoritative, but the other is unfamiliar with it, the two should agree that the conversation can't really continue until that is resolved. For some, it can never be resolved, because they never accept any information that doesn't agree with what they thought before, but two reasonable people should at least be able to agree that the science is not settled or they are not expert enough to evaluate it or something like that.
