It was so nice to hear a pundit finally tell it like it is…the Obamacare IS a Republican Healthcare Plan. Steven Brill set it out perfectly on MSNBC tonight - the Dems have tried for years and years prior to Obama to enact actual progressive healthcare plans but failed. Finally Obama caught on and tried the Republican plan. That’s what’s so ridiculous about this and proves to me at least that the whole lot of them, Repub and Dem, are rotten. The Dems line up in support of the Republican plan, the the Repubs line up against their own plan because it’s the black guy promoting it. Oy what a mess.
The US has been operating under the republican health care plan for decades, the one where the health of hundreds of millions of people is entirely a commodity that can be turned into a profit for already wealthy people… like everything else in the US. The result for years was almost 50 million people without any coverage and about 100 million with coverage with so many holes that getting sick or hurt really wasn’t an option. The carrier would find someway to avoid paying some or all of the bills.
Obama care did help millions of Americans finally get coverage, but to just get past the Republicans in Congress it required watering it down so much it’s not sustainable. The problem isn’t that the Democrats are too much like the Republicans, the problem is that capitalism as practiced in the US isn’t sustainable. Something Americans are about to experience full force as Trump and his cronies take office.
Our health care isn’t perfect here in Canada and there’s a constant battle with the medical establishment itself to kept it universal, but we pay about half as much per capita as Americans and ALL Canadians are covered. Some things really do rise above the profit motive in a civil society, but you don’t really have much of one left in the US and it’s about to get much worse.

Oy what a mess. The reason we have a "Republican" health plan is because the Republicans in Congress would not stand for a Democratic one. It was the best that Congress could push through. Watch for even this compromise to be trashed by the Republicans. They never wanted anything resembling a universal health plan in the first place, and now they have a chance to get what they wanted all along--a genuine Republican plan--pay up or die. Lois

The real problem is the disease of capitalism.
I have not seen much of this “Dems lining up behind Obamacare”. I’ve seen a lot of talk about it being a compromise, not what we really want, etc.
Republicans OTOH were almost silent as Romney, who had done something very similar in Mass. in 2006 tried to say he was different.
Republicans want a champagne health plan on a beer pocketbook. Listen to any of them. They promise a wonderful health care plan–better than the ACA but their nexr words are “at a better price.” A better price for the government, that is, not for the populace. It will be the same old plan we’ve had before, The pay up or die plan. You get what you pay for.

Democrats stood there for a year, while the Republicans were looking Democrats in the eye and pissing on their pant legs, and Merrick Garland, and our Democracy - daring us to stop them. And like deer stuck in the headlights, the Democrats did jack. And nothing happened.
New definition of Chutzpah.
Mitch McConnell now says the American people ‘will not tolerate’ politicians blocking a Supreme Court nominee
January 4, 2017
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has apparently moved on from blocking Supreme Court nominees now that Republicans are in charge. At a press conference Wednesday, McConnell scoffed atSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) suggestion that Democrats would oppose the GOP’s nominee “tooth and nail” if they “don’t appoint someone who’s really good.” “I think that’s something the American people simply will not tolerate,” McConnell said, noting that while it’s okay to block a nominee for the entirety of a president’s last year in office — effectively forcing his nominee out of the running — it’s a step too far to not confirm a nominee “at all.”
