I know most people reading this already know these arguments but it’s worth listening to for the “how” of addressing them. First, it’s a good exercise in Bayesian logic. Second, comments like “You can’t makes excuses unless you have evidence”, are the kind of everyday phrases that Richard is so good at, breaking down the complexities of probabilities into simple terms. It can be a bit of slog early on, but he eventually gets to the conclusion that life, if you consider the evidence for evolution and the age of the universe is 100% probable.
I often see fans of Carrier letting him go on about all of this reasoning, but this guy challenges hims, sometimes as devil’s advocate, but either way, it makes the discussion more worthwhile. They go over some philosophical ground, without always pointing that it’s a philosophical question they are covering. Enough from me.
And he uses the example of the movie Zardoz. A cheesy 60’s sci-fi that portrays what could happen if superior beings tried to make a world that kept all people safe from harm, even from death. It can be found for free
