The Black Death

“The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death” by John Kelly.
Just had this recommended to me. I could think of someone else who might benefit from the read. It speaks of how religion, distrust of authority, lack of education, institutionalized ignorance AND denial all played a part in spreading the disease. While some organized their communities to do radical things like washing, others flogged themselves and blamed the Jews.

Sounds like an interesting read. Thanks. Lois

It does sound interesting. I was hoping they had it in audiobook format since my only free reading time seems to be during my drive to work but unfortunately no audiobook yet. Let us know how you like it.

Nothing new to say here. Just trying to get the vaccine thread off the front page

I have a brilliant idea guys, instead of flogging the Jews why not VACCINATE potential victims and use antibiotics? It could wipe out the Black Death and, wait a minute it did! The vaccine was so successful it isn't even available in the U.S. Now. What will those money grubbing pharmaceutical companies do? I guess vaccines do work. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00041848.htm Cap't Jack

Maybe the whole things is about marketing. We should be calling measles the spotted red death and mumps bloated death. MMR vaccine sounds so pedestrian, let’s call it anti-bloated red spotted death. Which makes anti-vaxxer pro-death.

I think you might be on to something here. The same principle could be applied to those who refuse medical treatment on religious grounds. But some religions refer to death as the final cure, and the goal of the living is to die and be with God. You would think that if the religious types really took their teachings to heart, they would all just wait to die, and religion itself would just die out with them. Perhaps the same will happen with anti-vaxxers.
