One of the associated articles speaks of surveys of 10 Islamic countries, and shows a strong majority of Muslims in favor of Sharia. So it seems that most Muslims do not want the western ideal of separation of church and state, but are in favor of democratic government. The article suggests, as a starting point that we, in the west, respect this view.
It seems to me that respecting a view that a religious ideology should be a foundational part of governments, is a starting point for promoting theocracies. (And that, IMO, is not good.)

Both acts were knee jerk efforts to contain and marginalize a racial and ethnic minority; xenophobia at it's worst. The Chinese eventually fought back using the only weapon they could effectively use, the judicial system. They sued for equal protection under the law and the act was repealed in 1943, right in the middle of WW II, embarrassing because China had become our ally. Whereas the Johnson Act was plainly racist fueled by post-war isolationism and the rise of the new Klan as a political make weight. White Northern Europeans were allowed in but Africans, Asians and Southern Europeans stay out. Should we now make the U.S. a bastion of WASPism? Why worry about Muslims coming into the country when their religion is protected by the First Amendment as are the rights of every American via the first ten? Should we have kept the Irish Catholics out as well? They snuck one of their own into the White House! Kennedy stated many times that he would adhere to the Constitution first and his religion second; all immigrants must abide by the Constitution first, including Muslims who want to become citizens. To even begin to try to effectively end problems with Islam by using MidA’s rhetorical solution, we would basically need a dictator who will abandon Constitutional religious protections. And it still wouldn’t work, as Islam is a religion and ideology. Borders can’t keep ideas out in a society that has any liberties to speak of. OTOH, we could adopt the North Korean model of government and solve the problem in the way Mid A suggests.
