Kind of based on the Rick and Morty episode that recently aired, about whether or not the conveniences of modern society have robbed us of meaning in our lives. Without any major hardships we bicker over the trivial things, most of us work for others instead of anything for ourselves. With most things handled, have we become weak in the process?
I was mostly getting at how today since we don’t have to worry about survival we focus on trivial things like games, and sports. Essentially anything that isn’t related to “subsistence living”. Or that we even stress about said games and the drama of our lives. If we were focused on survival like in the past then we wouldn’t have the humdrum grind of modern life with all it’s regulations taking away human agency. I mean people cheer for sports like it’s life or death out there when the outcome doesn’t really matter. Or how people become so invested in the stories of others (television) that they don’t write their own. Too much comfort seems to be taking away meaning from our lives, leaving us getting worked up over trinkets.
Yeah, um, okay

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote this time. Though think one thing most have lost is 'the drama of our lives' - they are too busy dreaming they could be someone else and have a lots more of what the rich "beautiful" have. Facade over substance and all that. For me the 'the drama of our lives' is what makes it such an adventurous joy - it's about paying attention one's own development, not in narcissist manner, but being our own critique in a constructive, non defeatist manner, mistakes, learning, achieving, set backs, come backs, it's all part of the same dance... The goals we set for ourselves as young people, require a life time of cultivation, that journey can be fun as you want it to be... You get back what you put into it. Then the drama paying attention to the years and the members of our families and even our greater community of coworkers and others we rub shoulders with regularly. You know our communities. The years roll by so fast and are so dynamic for those who have engaged in their lives and the challenges we've set for ourselves. Trouble is those cool perceptions and freedoms mentioned in the first paragraphs are things that require a certain bit of space between people, and places for for people to go to get away and be themselves without the constant pressure of a hundred prying eyes with all their contrivances and expectations. It's why passing through in '79, Silverton captivated me, I planted myself here where you were allowed real freedom no city dweller can fathom. But I digress. Guess my point is
John Calhoun's Mouse Utopia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z760XNy4VMhad it right, we and our crowded society are like mice. Look at that map of hate groups] notice anything? Then reflect on that satellite image of the USA at night. Too many are crowded and scared because they can see the future holds no hope for them. Unfortunately, scared injured animals like us, tend to react with rage and malaise for others.
Exhibit One, Dr. Calhoun had it right.
“malice” - Although that leads to a lot of malaise.
I was hoping for a response that didn’t give weight to Rousseau or the Unabomber
Welcome to the theme of the season.
What were you looking for?
Oh and out of curiosity, what does Rousseau have to do with what I wrote?
Welcome to the theme of the season. What were you looking for? Oh and out of curiosity, what does Rousseau have to do with what I wrote?Something to tell me that we weren't better off in a state of nature and that modern society is a good for all, instead of essentially saying that Roussaeu is right and the bomber. That the psychological ills we have brought upon is due to modernity.

That the psychological ills we have brought upon is due to modernity. That came out of your pipe. I said nothing of the sort. I did say over crowding is very, very bad, and I imagine you are trapped in the middle of some crowded machine driven, surveillance obsessed pit that too many big cities have become, thus your outlook often seems understandable to me. Thinking of cities. Jezz have a demonstration and the cops show up looking like ROBOCOPS - that's really weird, but that's today's world and like the foolish toad in the warming most don't even seem aware of the hideous transition these past decades. Bush/Cheney weren't enough, now we go psycho and vote Trump and Pence and give our government over to people who are dedicated to destroying it and turning our country into an oligarch run corporation. Of course that leaves the young increasingly hopeless, that is our malaise and it will only get worse as this oligarch machine grinds us into the ground. As for back to nature. Hate to break it to the world but our physical survival is dependent on a healthy nature - Earthly biosphere, ecosystems and biological diversity, (oh, yes and nice climatic conditions ;-) ). and good mental health requires some space between people, at least when they want and yes a little bit of nature*. Some need it more than others, that's cool and not the issue here. I'm bless in being a child during the last days when it was possible to imagine our planet limitless and a place of adventure and fortune. It had actually ending a few decades before, somewhere between WWI and WWII is my best guess, but still I felt the magic of Earth's lure deep into my bones. Didn't take long to learn how fast we were destroying it, but that's a different story. The living hell holes of varying degrees cities have become for all too many these days - that is the issue. A world where hope and adventure for younger people is being destroyed faster than most appreciate. *Yup, the one we are consuming and destroying as fast as possible
