I always wondered what happened to turbine cars back in the 60s. I remember hearing a radio announcer saying that turbine engines were banned from the Indy500 "because they were too fast". Like that makes sense for an auto race. I also recall watching a video clip of a race car engine mechanic talking as though he expected to lose his job because of turbine engines. Then they disappeared. No explanation. After working for IBM I conclude the technology is manipulated for the money. We have gone from the planned obsolescence of cars to the planned obsolescence of cell phone operating systems. That gave them a major advantage over piston engine cars in long-distance races. As for street cars, the problems with turbines include pollution and exhaust heat. They are simply not practical for street applications.

But that simply means we should have always assumed that there was a good chance of reality becoming worse than the models predict. If things turn out better than the models predict then what is the harm in that?

The problem was that the new building and the funding for large scale operations was put on hold because if the government ruled that geothermal steam was a mineral, then the companies had no mineral rights. Remember the wells that were in operation were not high heat wells. The new investment wells were going to go after the high heat.

Sorry for the delays, got a building project going on. I wasn’t sure where you were coming from on the other metals and I wanted to wait and see what Lausten came up with. The metals was the Achilles heel for the Geysers. Cinnabar deposits covers the areas of the high heat. Over one third of all the mercury mined in the United States has comes from the area. Years ago, when the Chinese were being stopped from working in California, they were allowed to work in the cinnabar mines in the Geyser area. This was because it was killing the miners and it was hard to find workers. I worked at the Geyser drilling test wells. At the time we had over twelve years of building new generating plants already blueprinted and our drilling results provided over twenty years of new building to be engineered. The Geysers was already the largest and most productive geothermal plant in the world at the time.
Today if you read about the Geysers geothermal, it will tell you that they ran out of water and they had to shut down the field. It still operates, but only as a shadow of what it once was. The Russian River has more than enough water for the Geysers. What is missing from the data is the facts about the mercury.
The Geysers resort was old western type of buildings that was quite old. It was a major hippy spot on the West Coast and very likely the top hippy spot in the world when you look at living places for hippies. During the summer it was like Woodstock but with much more nudity. The first time I saw the Geysers I thought it was a nudist colony. People lived in buses, campers, tents, teepees and just anything they could put together. The big swimming pools of different temperature, the steam caves, the mud ponds, and everything else of the resort was in operation. Some people were even living in the old cinnabar mine shafts. Some of the hills were very bright red in color from the cinnabar deposits. Steam was coming from some of the deposits and I was able to collect mercury that had puddled at the cinnabar deposits and in the mine shafts.
Today there is not one building. The area has been covered over with dirt and you could drive by it without ever knowing there was ever anything there. At the time I went to the Geysers you could buy chemistry toy sets with mercury. There was also the problem of deformed babies being born to hippies across the country. The only common factor was they all had smoked marijuana. And it is still a fear in some of the Bible belt areas that if you smoke marijuana you can have deformed babies. Deformed babies did not set well with the Christian mothers and the Christian movement got tough marijuana laws passed. All this happen in spite of the fact that marijuana has been used to help with child birth for a long time and is still used for that purpose today in some countries.
In connecting global warming. Geothermal energy is clean - if you stay away from cinnabar deposits. And the footprint is small. The battle for vase amount of new energy at the time was geothermal vs. nuclear. Note that the big size of the coal deposits in Wyoming had not been discovered yet and the Douglas gas plants were not built to handle the natural gas from the Highlight oil fields in Wyoming either. Nuclear won the battle by claiming it was the clean energy source. It takes seven to twelve years to build a geothermal operation. A big investment with no return for a long time. What we were hoping for was the government to help develop the geothermal drilling technology. If the drilling technology was developed then you could drill down anywhere on earth and collect heat. The problem is that with today’s technology there are very few spots of high heat that can be drilled. The Geysers today is not even a high heat area where they are processing the heat. The technology problem is that when you drill deep, the earth is more plastic than solid. And the hole will seal itself closed. Even at the Geysers we had to use reamers that we called hole openers on the drill line to keep the hole big enough that we could remove the drill pipe.
Recap. The Geysers had many generating plants in full operation. The runoff and steam releases from the plants had contaminated the Geysers area with mercury. The harm of mercury was not yet understood by the public. Wall Street and investors saw the Geysers operation as a model for geothermal power and as a contender for the future energy needs of America. The goal for Magna was to shut down the Geysers and move to Imperial Valley without the public ever knowing about the mercury problem. The shutdown worked, the public never caught on about the mercury. And how could you prove that the mercury contamination was not natural with the high heat wells shut down now?
Today if you compare the very small operation in Imperial Valley which would have been on the same power grid with the San Onofre Nuclear plant. The results compared to the costs of San Onofre are obvious that had the government backed the geothermal, it would have been the best choice for America.

Where does gold come from? Gold is made when neutron stars collide. Gold we mine from the Earth's crust was brought here by meteorites.
We are star dust. But, I think supernovas do it too, regular stars stop creating new elements at Iron. "meteorites" is a bit misleading - most it came from the stellar cloud that condensed into planets way long ago.

That's why we can find it in abundance only in a few select areas on earth. It takes a super nova or a collision from neutron stars to make gold.
