But, then it only takes one. I would just like to understand them a little more. Abrupt climate changes have been variously defined either simply as large changes within less than 30 years (Clark et al., 2002), or in a physical sense, as a threshold transition or a response that is rapid compared to forcing (Rahmstorf, 2001; Alley et al., 2003). Overpeck and Trenberth (2004) noted that not all abrupt changes need to be externally forced. Numerous terrestrial, ice and oceanic climatic records show that large, widespread, abrupt climate changes have occurred repeatedly throughout the past glacial interval (see review by Rahmstorf, 2002). High-latitude records show that ice age abrupt temperature events were larger and more widespread than were those of the Holocene. The most dramatic of these abrupt climate changes were the Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events, characterised by a warming in Greenland of 8°C to 16°C within a few decades (see Severinghaus and Brook, 1999; Masson-Delmotte et al., 2005a for a review) followed by much slower cooling over centuries. Another type of abrupt change were the Heinrich events; characterised by large discharges of icebergs into the northern Atlantic leaving diagnostic drop-stones in the ocean sediments (Hemming, 2004). In the North Atlantic, Heinrich events were accompanied by a strong reduction in sea surface salinity (Bond et al., 1993), as well as a sea surface cooling on a centennial time scale. Such ice age cold periods lasted hundreds to thousands of years, and the warming that ended them took place within decades (Figure 6.7; Cortijo et al., 1997; Voelker, 2002). At the end of the last glacial, as the climate warmed and ice sheets melted, climate went through a number of abrupt cold phases, notably the Younger Dryas and the 8.2 ka event.
Don't hold your breath waiting for a citation regarding an ice age happening in 20 years. Holden was part of a group that predicted an ice age by 2020, but that was back in 1971. We have more data and better computer models now, and the models that show we'd be sliding into an ice age in the next few millennia show how much impact our carbon emissions are having on the climate.Not to mention the various Clean Air Acts around the world that reversed the amount of aerosols we were injecting into our atmosphere, which in turn allowed more of the sun's energetic rays into Earth's climate system. It is now virtually certain that 2016 will beat 2015 for the dubious distinction of the hottest year on record. NASA is not the only agency that tracks global temperatures, and its methods differ slightly from the others. If the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also finds that July was the hottest such month on record and hottest month overall, it would mean that the past 15 months have each set records — an unprecedented feat in its database. In this paper, we describe an ethnographic study of the culture and practices of climate scientists at the Met Office Hadley Centre. The study examined how the scientists think about software correctness, how they prioritize requirements, and how they develop a shared understanding of their models. The findings show that climate scientists have developed customized techniques for verification and validation that are tightly integrated into their approach to scientific research. Their software practices share many features of both agile and open source projects, in that they rely on self-organisation of the teams, extensive use of informal communication channels, and developers who are also users and domain experts. These comparisons offer insights into why such practices work.

Latest studies show that enormous warm water bubbles in the ocean are having a noticeable impact on ecosystems. How should we interpret these changes? ... Heatwaves in the Northeast Pacific... An unusually long-lasting warm water bubble – nicknamed ‘The Blob’ – spread across the surface of the Northeast Pacific from winter 2013/2014 to the end of 2015. [2] The warm water bubble at times measured up to 1,600 kilometres in diameter and had water temperatures of more than 3 degrees Celsius above the long-term average. Because warm surface water has a lower density than the cold deep water, the exchange of nutrient-rich deep water with warm surface water was reduced, especially along the west coast of North America. This had far-reaching consequences for marine organisms and ecosystems: ... A stronger but shorter heatwave hit Australia‘s west coast at the turn of the year 2010/2011, with sea temperatures of up to 6 degrees Celsius above normal levels for that time of year. The seabed along the coast of Western Australia is known for its high concentration of brown algae. These marine ‘kelp forests’ have similar functions as terrestrial forests: they provide habitat and food resource to numerous species; in particular a large number of fish. Australian researchers demonstrated that most of the kelp forest stocks rapidly disappeared during this heatwave. [3] In total, an area of 1,000 square kilometres of kelp forest was lost – this corresponds to twice the size of Lake Constance. Today, algae stocks haven‘t recovered yet. Instead, a new ecosystem with tropical fish and seaweeds has developed. Looking ahead Until recently, climate models were unable to accurately represent the relevant physical and biogeochemical processes to simulate extreme events in the ocean and predict future changes. The uncertainties in future projections, particularly at the regional scale, were simply too large. [4] New model simulations linking the global carbon and oxygen cycle with high-resolution physical processes now enable us to make quantitative predictions about the frequency, strength and spatial distribution of future extreme events in the ocean for the first time. We realized in the 70s that we were facing a truly Faustian Bargain, over consumption, pollution and greenhouse gases driven warming would lead to cascading consequences that would lead to massive destruction of the ecosystems we depend on. It was all a question of timing. Learn to conserve, desire less, stretch out the budget, our planet would warm slower and we'd have more time to adapt. Think sustainability and husbanding our planet's natural resources, (wonders) and such lofty un-American thoughts. The solution was very simple less people, less consumption, learn to understand and respect our planet as the creator of all we have and need. Why we don't shift to Hemp farming is completely beyond my understanding. It is one of the few crops which is eco-friendly AND provides a remarkable versatility of practical uses as, a healthy foodsource, to fuel, to paper, to cloths, to building materials and as an EFFECTIVE CO2 sequestering method. If ever there was a sacred plant, it would be Hemp. We can now buy and smoke Pot, but we can't grow Hemp. It's illegal! Go figure.Blame it on the anti-drug nuts. Common sense never comes into it.
