I wouldn’t call ancient Mesopotamia an isolated society without much trade. And their math was sophisticated for the time. You’re correct that necessity is the mother of invention. For some reason, some people have this drive to go beyond what’s necessary. That was the West for a long time. ---

USA seen by an ultra right French ( Google translated) Trump’s presidential entourage (the term “cabinet” seems rather limited in its scope) includes quite the collection of billionaires. The list includes Elon Musk ($363 billion), Donald himself ($6.3 billion), Warren Stephens ($3.4 billion), Linda McMahon ($3 billion), Jared Isaacman ($1.7 billion), Howard Lutnick ($1.5 billion), Doug Burgum ($1.1 billion), Vivek Ramaswamy ($1 billion), Steven Witkoff ($1 billion), and Scott Bessent (unknown, supposedly colossal fortune). This collection of very wealthy individuals being given political appointments is completely unprecedented in the annals of American presidential administrations. Musk is the obvious exception, since he is much richer than all the others combined, but it is remarkable that they are all billionaires. Why are the giant, overstuffed moneybags drawn to Trump like moths to a flame? What could possibly motivate them to pick up the fallen flag of government service and march? What do they hope to gain? What do they fear to lose? But first we must answer an even simpler question: Who are these people? The answer is: They are rich bastards. Why bastards? It’s also simple: They acquired their wealth in this century—a century in which the United States has steadily lost ground. So far in the 21st century, China’s industrial output has increased tenfold, as has the wealth of the Chinese population as a whole, while U.S. industrial output has increased onefold, a growth of a fraction of a percent. Excluding the top 1% of Americans (in terms of wealth and income), which is an unusual aberration (they represent a country within a country, so to speak), the United States has become considerably poorer. This becomes immediately and abundantly clear to anyone who flies to the United States from one of the modern, shiny megacities such as Beijing, Moscow, or Dubai. The place is old—simply outdated and dated, rather than antique or classic, because it was built hastily and cheaply. It is dilapidated and dirty. The people are cheaply and slovenly dressed, vulgar, unkempt, often pushy and rude, quick to anger and violence, and generally abusive. The food that is widely available to them is of too poor a quality even for the pig trough. It is no wonder that many of them look sick: they are pale or swollen-faced and obese to staggering proportions. Obscenities fly in public places, whether or not there are children present. Children are a special case. They are not normal – curious, amazed by the amazing world around them and eager to explore it and connect with everyone they meet. On the contrary, they are afraid of strangers, estranged even from their own parents, whose upbringing often seems lukewarm and dishonest, and sink into the meaningless abyss of a digital device that was put in their hands practically from birth like a kind of electronic pacifier.
